Regulatory Specialist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.

📋 Description

• Oversee federal and state regulations concerning medical, biomedical, and hazardous waste, including EPA, RCRA, Clean Water Act, and state mandates.

• Administer stormwater and wastewater compliance, which includes NPDES permits, SWPPPs, No Exposure certifications, POTW permits, sampling, reporting, and inspections.

• Assist with DOT/PHMSA hazardous materials compliance, covering packaging, labeling, shipping papers, manifests, employee training, and transporter permits.

• Oversee Board of Pharmacy licenses for pharmaceutical waste, including applications, renewals, reporting, inspections, and multi-state obligations.

• Aid in DEA controlled-substance compliance, involving registrations, storage and security, destruction documentation, inventories, recordkeeping, theft/loss reporting, and reverse distribution requirements.

• Prepare for and assist during regulatory inspections and audits from the DEA, EPA, DOT, state agencies, and Boards of Pharmacy.

• Address agency requests, inspection findings, deficiency notices, and other regulatory issues, while tracking corrective actions until completion.

• Stay updated on regulatory changes and revise company policies, SOPs, training, and compliance procedures accordingly.

• Offer regulatory guidance to employees and clients regarding waste classification, segregation, labeling, containers, documentation, and state-specific regulations.

• Record and communicate non-compliance matters, provide corrective advice or retraining, and monitor recurring patterns.

• Create and present regulatory training for employees and clients on environmental compliance, waste handling, packaging, labeling, stormwater, and spill response.

• Maintain permits, licenses, training records, regulatory correspondence, waste disposal certificates, generator agreements, and other compliance-related documentation.

• Oversee Sharps' State Registration & Regulatory Update Hub and disseminate regulatory updates throughout the organization.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Public Health, Regulatory Affairs, Occupational Safety, or a related discipline; equivalent relevant experience may be accepted.

• 5+ years of experience in regulatory compliance, environmental health and safety (EHS), or a comparable compliance position.

• Previous experience in medical/biohazardous waste, healthcare, environmental services, or hazardous materials transportation is highly desirable.

• Familiarity with at least one of the following: EPA/RCRA regulations, NPDES, DOT/PHMSA hazardous materials regulations, Board of Pharmacy licensing, or DEA controlled-substance requirements.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the capacity to clarify regulatory requirements to non-technical audiences.

• Experience in developing or delivering compliance training programs.

• Strong attention to detail with the ability to handle multiple permits, licenses, deadlines, and records efficiently.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the capability to learn compliance and waste management systems.

• Willingness to travel up to 25% to company facilities and client locations.

• REHS, CHMM, DOT Hazmat, or another relevant certification is preferred.

• Experience engaging directly with regulatory agencies is preferred.

• Familiarity with NPDES, SWPPPs, wastewater permitting, sampling, or discharge monitoring is preferred.

• Experience with Board of Pharmacy licensing or DEA registrations and controlled-substance compliance is preferred.

• Knowledge of biomedical waste treatment methods, including autoclave and incineration, is preferred.

• Familiarity with FDA regulations, ISO 13485, ISO 14971, or 510(k) requirements is preferred.
