This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Barbados.

📋 Description

• Review and proofread assigned news articles, columns, features, and opinion pieces for spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, clarity, and consistency.

• Uphold Barbados TODAY’s tone, style, house style, brand guidelines, and publication-specific style guides.

• Verify names, titles, dates, figures, places, references, visuals, data, units, scales, and numbers against reliable sources.

• Highlight inconsistencies, misattributions, missing credits, and unresolved queries.

• Detect and escalate potential risks related to defamation, contempt, privacy, and bias to the assigning editor or legal representative.

• Review designed pages to ensure accuracy in copy, captions, display text, and formatting prior to publication.

• Optimize content for digital readability by employing concise headlines, subheads, bullets, callouts, and SEO best practices.

• Examine graphics, captions, credits, source lines, image attribution, alignment, fonts, spacing, missing sections, duplicated content, and broken formatting.

• Ensure that headlines, subheadings, social captions, and photo captions correspond accurately with the related articles.

• Offer feedback and corrections to writers and editors, and submit reviewed content with markup.

• Adhere to deadlines and production schedules.

• Promptly communicate queries and discrepancies to the relevant editors.

• Monitor, record, and report recurring editorial or stylistic errors on a monthly basis.

• Foster respectful communication among editorial, design, writing, and digital teams.

• Engage in editorial meetings or training sessions as necessary.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in proofreading news articles, columns, features, opinion pieces, and other editorial content.

• Familiarity with and adherence to established style guides, house style, brand guidelines, and publication-specific style guides.

• Proficient in verifying names, titles, dates, figures, places, references, visuals, data, units, scales, and numbers against credible source material.

• Capable of identifying and escalating defamation, contempt, privacy, and bias risks.

• Knowledgeable in SEO best practices pertaining to headlines and metadata.

• Competent in quality-checking designed pages, copy, captions, display text, formatting, alignment, fonts, spacing, sections, and duplicated content.

• Ability to provide prompt feedback and marked-up corrections to writers and editors.

• Skilled in meeting deadlines and production schedules without compromising editorial quality.

• Effective communication skills with editors, writers, designers, and the digital team.

• Willingness to participate in editorial meetings or training sessions as needed.
