This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Oversee research reporters engaged in investigative journalism and directly manage team reporters.
• Act as an escalation point for intricate reporting challenges, demanding deadlines, and delicate sourcing or verification concerns.
• Organize and prioritize incoming research requests efficiently.
• Collaborate with the research editor to allocate tasks, shape strategy, and guarantee consistent research support across various desks, beats, and regions.
• Offer hands-on editorial direction regarding records strategies, advanced sourcing, database utilization, OSINT methodologies, and verification processes.
• Mentor text editors and reporters, while identifying training opportunities within the newsroom.
• Work alongside reporters and editors to establish research objectives, frame investigations, and link information across extensive datasets.
• Enhance research workflows, documentation, organization, and best practices.
• Cultivate relationships with editors, reporters, partner newsrooms, and specialized teams.
• Participate in hiring, onboarding, mentoring, and providing performance feedback for distributed research personnel.
• Support the management and administration of research tools and resources, contributing to contract negotiations.
• Assess new technologies, databases, and applications pertinent to investigative reporting.
• Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive team environment.
• Minimum of three years of experience managing a research team, preferably within a journalism context.
• Extensive hands-on research experience, ideally focused on investigative journalism or in-depth government/investigative research.
• Comprehensive knowledge of financial, corporate, government, legal, or OSINT resources.
• Awareness of AI applications in investigative reporting.
• Profound experience in identifying, obtaining, searching, and analyzing public records.
• Strong grasp of government documents and processes at local, state, and federal levels.
• Exceptional ability to guide staff in assessing and verifying information from various sources.
• Proficient in searching and utilizing premium databases.
• Capability to swiftly identify and employ emerging technologies and applications relevant to investigative research.
• Experience in building morale and promoting professional development within a geographically dispersed team.
• Outstanding communication and collaboration abilities.
• Sharp attention to detail with the capacity to synthesize complex information and discern patterns and connections.
• Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Proven track record of managing multiple projects, adhering to tight deadlines, and performing effectively under pressure.
• Willingness and ability to travel occasionally for staff retreats, training, or other necessary events.
