This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Utilize specialized, expert knowledge to enhance PHI research and development efforts aimed at improving rapidly evolving probabilistic severe-weather forecasts.
• Create, develop, and assess AI/ML methodologies for probabilistic hazard forecasting.
• Oversee the integration of WoFS ensemble outputs with PHI systems and operational workflows.
• Innovate methods to combine WoFS forecasts with radar, satellite, lightning, and environmental data.
• Execute data analysis, visualizations, verification, and studies on explainability.
• Guide the development of software tools, workflows, and visualization products that support research, testing, and operational transitions.
• Spearhead user engagement and evaluation initiatives at the Hazardous Weather Testbed (HWT).
• Examine feedback from forecasters and stakeholders to inform product development.
• Collaborate closely with scientists, developers, forecasters, and external partners.
• Prepare technical documentation, software repositories, evaluation reports, and project deliverables.
• Contribute to quarterly and annual project reports.
• Lead or assist in the creation of peer-reviewed publications and disseminate findings at conferences, workshops, and stakeholder meetings.
• Offer technical guidance and limited oversight to project team members.
• Bachelor's Degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, computer science, data science, engineering, or a related discipline.
• Over 8 years of professional or academic experience.
• Experience in research related to severe convective storms, hazardous weather forecasting, or probabilistic prediction systems.
• Familiarity with ensemble forecasting systems, including Warn-on-Forecast (WoFS) or similar convection-allowing ensemble prediction systems.
• Experience in applying artificial intelligence and/or machine learning techniques to meteorological, environmental, or geospatial data.
• Proven experience in leading a project team or providing limited supervision in a technical research setting.
• Proficient in scientific programming and software development using Python and associated data analysis and visualization tools.
• Experience with large observational and model datasets, including radar, satellite, lightning, and environmental data.
• Understanding of forecast verification methodologies, uncertainty quantification, and model evaluation techniques.
• Experience with high-performance computing (HPC) resources and contemporary software development practices.
• Ability to articulate complex scientific ideas through presentations, technical reports, and peer-reviewed publications.
• Experience collaborating with operational users, stakeholders, or forecasters in developing and assessing decision-support tools.
• Must complete an online IT security awareness course within one week of commencing employment.
