Principal Software Engineer

📋 Description

• Provide technical guidance for the Digital Engagement portfolio

• Implement scalable architectures and lead engineering teams focused on customer engagement, personalization, communications, and data-driven experiences

• Promote engineering excellence across various teams and influence product strategy through technology

• Ensure that software solutions are scalable, secure, resilient, and maintainable

• Collaborate with Product Management, Engineering Leadership, Security, Architecture, and DevOps

• Mentor engineers and establish best practices in engineering

• Define architectural decisions that enhance performance, reliability, maintainability, scalability, and security

• Oversee the development of scalable, secure, cloud-native services across multiple products, stacks, and cloud providers

• Assess emerging technologies and recommend strategies for adoption

• Act as the primary technical escalation point for complex engineering challenges

• Drive technical roadmaps that align with business goals

• Design, develop, and maintain enterprise-grade applications primarily in PHP/Laravel, as well as C#/.NET

• Lead application refactoring, cloud migration, monolith decomposition, framework upgrades, and the reduction of technical debt

• Develop highly available cloud applications leveraging AWS services and corresponding Azure and Google Cloud services

• Optimize database performance through schema design, indexing, query optimization, caching, and database architecture

• Create highly testable, maintainable, and reusable software components

• Promote the adoption of AI agents throughout the engineering lifecycle

• Advocate for clean architecture, Domain-Driven Design, specification-driven development, and secure coding standards

• Establish development standards, coding guidelines, testing strategies, and deployment processes

• Lead architecture, code, design, and technical planning reviews

• Enhance automated testing, observability, monitoring, and application performance

• Own deployment practices utilizing continuous small changes and feature flags

• Collaborate with Product Management and Engineering Managers on technical solutions and investments

• Influence technical decisions across various engineering teams

• Communicate technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

• Mentor engineers through coaching, code reviews, pair programming, and architectural guidance

• Foster a culture of engineering excellence, innovation, ownership, and continuous learning

• Assist in establishing career development paths and technical competency standards

• Facilitate technical knowledge sharing through presentations, documentation, and architectural discussions

• Lead incident response and root cause analysis for critical production issues

• Enhance observability, monitoring, alerting, and operational readiness

• Promote automation in development, deployment, testing, and infrastructure


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

• Over 10 years of professional software engineering experience

• More than 5 years in designing enterprise-scale distributed systems and cloud-native applications

• Experience as a technical lead, staff engineer, or principal engineer

• Expert-level proficiency in PHP

• Familiarity with modern PHP frameworks such as Laravel or Symfony

• Expert-level proficiency in MySQL / Amazon Aurora MySQL

• Expert-level proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript

• Expert-level proficiency in RESTful APIs and web services

• Proficiency in C# and modern .NET, including ASP.NET Core and Azure Functions

• Extensive experience with one major cloud provider and working knowledge of another; AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud

• Comfort with TypeScript and at least one of React, Vue, or Angular

• Experience in containerized application development and deployment using Docker, Kubernetes, or similar technologies

• Familiarity with CI/CD, DevOps best practices, observability, application performance monitoring, and event-driven architectures

• Experience in designing RESTful APIs, service-oriented architectures, and distributed systems

• Knowledge of OAuth, SSO integration, API authentication, secrets management, and security best practices

• Expertise in automated unit, integration, API, and end-to-end testing

• Exceptional communication, collaboration, organization, and leadership skills

• Ability to influence technical direction across multiple teams

• Capability to work effectively in a remote work environment

• Ability to manage extended computer-based work and collaborate via Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and other meeting technologies

• Domestic and/or international travel may be required, estimated up to 5%

• Desired: experience with church technology, nonprofit SaaS, or multi-tenant CMS and website-builder products

• Desired: proficiency in AWS services including EC2, Lambda, RDS/Aurora, S3, SQS, and CloudFront

• Desired: knowledge of video streaming and media pipelines, including AWS MediaLive, MediaPackage, HLS, and transcoding services

• Desired: experience with high-volume messaging and alerting through Twilio, SendGrid, or similar APIs

• Desired: familiarity with search platforms such as Solr, Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, or Algolia

• Desired: experience in Linux-based web application administration and optimization

• Desired: knowledge of infrastructure as code, particularly Terraform and Helm charts

• Desired: proficiency in Office 365, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
