Principal Naval Architect / Marine Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alaska.

📋 Description

• Act as the senior technical authority for Allen Marine’s fleet of vessels, shipyard operations, and marine infrastructure.

• Oversee the development, technical evaluation, and approval of vessel designs, modifications, repairs, conversions, and structural enhancements.

• Prepare, review, authorize, and when legally permissible, seal engineering drawings, plans, specifications, calculations, and technical documentation.

• Conduct or coordinate naval architectural assessments, including stability, weight, hydrostatics, buoyancy, trim, structural modifications, and machinery configurations.

• Assess vessel modifications for structural soundness, stability, operational effectiveness, maintainability, and compliance with regulations.

• Execute field inspections and measurements on vessels, integrating existing conditions into engineering designs.

• Support projects related to vessel construction, repair, refit, conversion, and maintenance.

• Provide senior-level engineering insights and practical solutions for complex challenges.

• Manage the technical review of drawings, calculations, specifications, equipment selections, and technical submissions from contractors, consultants, and vendors.

• Offer engineering and design assistance for docks, ramps, gangways, platforms, and other marine infrastructures.

• Design or modify structural elements for docks, ramps, and shore facilities.

• Assess existing structures and propose repair, modification, or replacement solutions.

• Create plans and specifications for both shop-fabricated and field-installed structures.

• Assist in engineering requirements, permitting, and coordination with contractors, surveyors, architects, engineers, and regulatory bodies.

• Convert operational and business needs into feasible, cost-effective engineering solutions.

• Aid Project Managers with technical scopes, cost estimates, material needs, schedules, and project planning.

• Provide engineering support during construction, resolving field conditions or design conflicts.

• Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with drawings, specifications, and engineering standards.

• Assist with commissioning, testing, inspections, and acceptance of finalized projects.

• Maintain precise engineering drawings, calculations, revisions, and technical records.

• Lead investigations into root causes and develop corrective actions, risk mitigation strategies, and long-term solutions.

• Communicate technical requirements and engineering recommendations to project, operations, contractor, regulatory, and leadership stakeholders.

• Offer technical oversight for U.S. Coast Guard standards, classification requirements, building codes, ASTM standards, and other regulations.

• Assist with regulatory inspections and approvals while coordinating with the U.S. Coast Guard, classification societies, permitting authorities, and regulatory agencies.

• Identify regulatory, permitting, certification, and engineering approval requirements early in the project planning phase.

• Travel periodically to Allen Marine facilities, vessels, shipyards, and operational sites, primarily throughout Southeast Alaska.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closely related engineering field.

• An active Professional Engineer (PE) license in good standing is mandatory.

• Must possess the capability and willingness to obtain engineering licensure by comity in Alaska and other jurisdictions as required by project needs.

• At least 10 years of progressively responsible professional engineering experience in naval architecture, marine engineering, structural engineering, marine construction, or a closely related discipline.

• Proven track record of managing complex engineering projects.

• Strong comprehension of vessel structures, marine systems, stability, and marine construction principles.

• Ability to read and produce engineering drawings and technical documentation proficiently.

• Proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD, Rhino, SolidWorks, or similar applications.

• Excellent analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving capabilities.

• Skilled in conducting field measurements and inspections, translating field conditions into workable engineering solutions.

• Strong written and verbal communication abilities.

• Capable of working independently while effectively collaborating with Project Managers, shipyard personnel, vessel crews, contractors, and regulatory agencies.

• Possess a valid U.S. driver's license and a clean driving record.

• Ability to work aboard vessels and marine structures, including climbing ladders, accessing confined or hard-to-reach areas, and wearing necessary personal protective gear.

• Competent in working independently in a remote setting, maintaining reliable communication and connectivity, managing priorities across multiple projects, and remaining responsive across Alaska time zones and project schedules.

• Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays during the tour season.
