Principal Mechanical Integration Engineer – DCI Pipes, Frames and Structures

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.

📋 Description

• Design and integrate hydronic systems comprising pumps, piping networks, valves, and heat exchangers specifically for cooling applications in data centers.

• Create and develop mechanical frames, enclosures, and support structures for power and cooling products used in data centers.

• Conduct advanced structural analysis utilizing FEA tools under various loads such as static, dynamic, seismic, and thermal.

• Analyze load paths, stress concentrations, and the fatigue life of structural components.

• Design metal enclosures that facilitate airflow, thermal containment, EMI shielding, and environmental protection.

• Assess and implement materials, coatings, and fabrication technologies.

• Engage with customers and conduct site visits.

• Produce detailed CAD models and fabrication drawings, which include weldments, sheet metal, and machined parts.

• Choose materials and fabrication techniques to enhance cost-effectiveness, performance, and reliability.

• Collaborate with electrical, thermal, and systems engineering teams.

• Lead mechanical design reviews and assist in cross-functional design validation.

• Develop and maintain BOMs, specifications, test plans, and engineering change orders.

• Promote design-for-manufacturability, cost reduction, and performance enhancement.

• Interact with suppliers and customers to resolve fabrication challenges and ensure adherence to quality standards.

• Support lifecycle management, obsolescence planning, and alternative sourcing strategies.

• Carry out root cause analysis and corrective actions for mechanical failures or issues encountered in the field.

• Ensure designs facilitate airflow management, thermal containment, and integration with cooling systems.

• Work in conjunction with compliance and certification teams to fulfill UL, CE, RoHS, and REACH requirements.

• Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.

• Over 8 years of experience in mechanical design and fabrication, ideally within a data center, industrial, or power systems environment.

• Proficient in CAD software (SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor) and FEA tools (ANSYS, Abaqus).

• Strong understanding of metal fabrication processes, including welding, sheet metal forming, and machining.

• Experience with structural design for heavy equipment or large assemblies.

• Knowledgeable in thermal and airflow considerations related to enclosure design.

• Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across functions.

• Capable of working independently with minimal supervision.

• Proficient in interpreting business publications, professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations.

• Skilled in drafting reports, business correspondence, and procedural guides.

• Capable of presenting information and addressing inquiries from management, clients, and the public.

• Competent in evaluating projects, identifying risks, and establishing project milestones.

• Familiar with stage-gate processes in project lifecycle management (PLCM).

• Ability to mentor junior engineers.

• Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 30% of the time.

• Preferred: Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

• Preferred: Experience in designing mechanical systems for data centers, telecom, or industrial power/cooling products.

• Preferred: Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.

• Preferred: Knowledge of regulatory and safety standards relevant to data center infrastructure.

• Preferred: Practical experience in prototype fabrication and testing.

• Experience with global suppliers and contract manufacturers is a plus.
