Principal Machine Learning Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Develop new machine learning systems from scratch, address data gaps as they emerge, and enhance the current ML pipeline.

• Analyze and apply ML research papers on alternative model architectures, subsequently conducting training experiments to compare results with existing production models.

• Establish and oversee infrastructure, such as a Redis cluster, to support machine learning workloads.

• Contribute to and assist in guiding architectural choices and statistical methodologies in collaboration with the wider engineering team.

• Help define Thrive Market's long-term vision for search and discovery, taking into account how large language models have transformed the possibilities of development.

• Communicate model outcomes and strategic plans, highlighting business and revenue implications.

• Integrate practical MLOps execution with research-oriented thinking across infrastructure, experimentation, production, and business results.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of machine learning engineering experience, encompassing both MLOps and research-focused roles, with a proven record of principal-level impact from research papers to production implementations and business impact presentations.

• Practical experience in reading and applying ML research papers and conducting comparative training experiments to assess new model architectures against production standards.

• Proficient in building and managing ML infrastructure and pipelines, including setting up a Redis cluster.

• Familiarity with search and discovery systems, particularly regarding how large language models have influenced the decision of building in-house versus purchasing solutions.

• Ability to function as a cross-functional leader rather than just an individual contributor, capable of engaging in discussions about architecture and statistical methodologies across teams.

• Experience in presenting technical findings and strategic plans, including business and revenue implications, to diverse or executive audiences.

• Practical knowledge in search, personalization, recommendations, ranking, or lifecycle modeling.

• Understanding of MLOps best practices, including model versioning, CI/CD for ML, monitoring, and managing models in containerized and orchestrated environments (Docker, Kubernetes).

• Background in e-commerce, marketplace, or subscription-based business models.

• Experience working in settings with moderate technical debt or evolving data infrastructures.

• Proven track record in defining and overseeing metrics, experimentation frameworks, or model performance monitoring in production.

• Demonstrated capability to influence practices beyond immediate project scopes, shaping standards, best practices, or strategies across teams.
