Principal Architect

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the enterprise cloud-native reference architecture for Azure, AWS, and GCP, encompassing networking, identity management, compute, and storage patterns.

• Spearhead initiatives related to cloud security, identity, and IAM, guiding teams towards contemporary federated identity models.

• Establish landing zone and networking guidelines, which include account/subscription architecture, VPC/VNet topology, connectivity, and segmentation.

• Offer guidance on selecting compute runtimes among containers, VMs, bare metal, and serverless options.

• Develop and refine Kubernetes standards across EKS, AKS, and GKE, focusing on cluster architecture, multi-tenancy, and platform hardening.

• Manage infrastructure-as-code standards and promote their adoption within engineering teams.

• Assist teams in linking autoscaling and capacity planning behaviors to telemetry signals.

• Enhance FinOps maturity by incorporating cost data into cloud tools, establishing unit economics, and advancing open billing standards like FOCUS.

• Identify actionable AI/ML applications in cloud operations, such as anomaly detection, root cause analysis, and automation.

• Set architecture standards for AI-driven cloud systems, addressing scaling, latency, token costs, and related metrics.

• Ensure that new AI-driven platforms are architected correctly from the outset.

• Engage in cross-functional architecture working groups aimed at developing cloud-native and hybrid cloud standards.

• Publish architecture decision records and reference implementations.

• Mentor architects and platform engineers; conduct architecture reviews.

• Collaborate with security and compliance teams on HIPAA, SOX, and PCI obligations.

• Represent CVS Health in vendor assessments and engage with the open-source community.

• Write architecture documentation, create proof-of-concepts, configure cloud infrastructure, and present findings to leadership.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of experience in infrastructure, cloud architecture, or platform engineering.

• More than 8 years of architectural experience in cloud infrastructure at a large enterprise level.

• Extensive experience with at least two of Azure, AWS, or GCP, covering networking, identity, compute, and storage.

• At least 5 years of experience with Kubernetes in production environments (EKS, AKS, GKE, or OpenShift).

• Strong hands-on expertise with infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, Pulumi, Helm, ArgoCD, or similar).

• Familiarity with workload identity and zero-trust networking frameworks.

• Proven success in writing architecture standards that have been adopted by other teams.

• Excellent communication skills with both engineering teams and senior management.

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; equivalent work experience is acceptable.

• Experience with on-premises/private cloud environments (preferred).

• Knowledge of observability tools, including OpenTelemetry, Grafana, Prometheus, Datadog, Splunk, or Dynatrace (preferred).

• Experience in defining SLOs/SLIs and alerting strategies at an organizational level (preferred).

• Familiarity with streaming platforms like Kafka or Confluent (preferred).

• Background in AIOps or ML-based anomaly detection (preferred).

• Experience in FinOps, including cloud cost optimization, chargeback, and unit economics (preferred).

• Knowledge of service mesh or eBPF-based tools (preferred).

• Participation in open-source communities (preferred).

• Experience in healthcare, insurance, or financial services (preferred).

• Cloud certifications are advantageous but not mandatory.
