Part-Time Structural Corrugated Designer – Temporary

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Florida.

📋 Description

• Create designs for corrugated shipping boxes and protective packaging tailored for retail graphics, signage, display components, printed materials, and visual products.

• Develop appropriately sized packaging that safeguards products while minimizing materials, freight cube, packing labor, and overall packaging expenses.

• Collaborate with Research & Development, Production, Packout, Fulfillment, Sales, and Operations concerning product dimensions, fragility, handling, shipping, and customer needs.

• Generate structural drawings, dielines, specifications, samples, and production-ready files utilizing ArtiosCAD or similar CAD software.

• Offer design and technical assistance for new box-making machinery, encompassing box styles, machine-ready files, materials, setup, and packaging standards.

• Design packaging for both recurring products and custom/one-off shipments.

• Create internal corrugated components such as pads, dividers, partitions, sleeves, corner protection, and inserts.

• Maintain a comprehensive library of approved box styles, structural designs, specifications, materials, and packaging standards.

• Support packaging trials and adjust designs based on fit, protection, packing time, damage risk, material utilization, and manufacturing feedback.

• Analyze shipping damage and identify opportunities for structural or material enhancements.

• Develop structural concepts, prototypes, and production-ready solutions for custom corrugated retail displays and point-of-purchase initiatives.

• Collaborate with Sales and R&D to convert customer, brand, product, and retailer requirements into manufacturable structural solutions.

• Create prototypes and samples using Zund, Kongsberg, or equivalent digital cutting equipment.

• Assess custom display and point-of-purchase designs for structural integrity, manufacturability, assembly, material utilization, graphics integration, shipping, installation, and cost efficiency.

• Transition approved concepts from prototype development to production-ready design and manufacturing.

• Assist with palletization, load configuration, packout, and shipment efficiency.

• Identify opportunities to standardize box sizes and materials, enhance internal packaging utilization, reduce external sourcing, and boost packaging efficiency.

• Perform additional duties as assigned.

⛳️ Requirements

• Minimum of 3 years of experience in structural corrugated design, packaging design, corrugated converting, or a closely related field; relevant education and industry experience will also be considered.

• Practical experience in designing corrugated shipping boxes and protective packaging.

• Proficient in ArtiosCAD or similar structural packaging CAD software.

• Strong knowledge of corrugated materials, board grades, flute profiles, box styles, and the processes involved in corrugated manufacturing/converting.

• Capability to convert product dimensions, protection needs, packout requirements, and shipping limitations into effective structural packaging designs.

• Ability to visualize how flat corrugated material transforms, folds, and assembles into three-dimensional boxes, protective structures, and display solutions.

• Understanding of production aspects, including cutting, creasing, scoring, folding, gluing, digital cutting, and assembly processes.

• Excellent problem-solving skills with a focus on straightforward, manufacturable, and cost-efficient solutions.

• Capability to manage multiple design requests while collaborating effectively with R&D, Production, Packout, Fulfillment, Sales, and Operations.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

• Must have authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.

• Preferred: experience in designing corrugated retail displays, point-of-purchase displays, merchandising solutions, or other structural display applications.

• Preferred: experience in designing packaging for printed graphics, signage, retail displays, fixtures, or other large-format visual products.

• Preferred: experience in supporting automated or on-demand box-making machinery and creating machine-ready box designs.

• Preferred: experience operating Zund, Kongsberg, or comparable digital sample-cutting equipment.

• Preferred: familiarity with CAPE, TOPS, or other palletization and load-optimization software.

• Preferred: working knowledge of ISTA package performance testing and strategies for shipping damage prevention.

• Preferred: experience in developing corrugated inserts, partitions, corner protection, and other protective packaging structures.

• Preferred: familiarity with Esko Studio, Esko WebCenter, Adobe Illustrator, or related packaging/design workflow tools.

• Preferred: understanding of retailer display requirements, graphics integration, display assembly, and packing considerations.

• Preferred: experience in a high-mix, custom manufacturing, print, retail graphics, fulfillment, or packout environment.
