This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Florida.
• Provide top-notch legal guidance, counseling, and brief services as a licensed attorney.
• Advocate for veterans, low-income individuals, and other marginalized client groups with restricted access to legal assistance.
• Manage requests for legal services and assess the complexity of clients' legal issues.
• Evaluate income qualifications and verify eligibility determinations for applicants.
• Offer suitable legal and social services referrals for clients and applicants who do not qualify.
• Suggest exceptions to financial criteria to the supervisor when warranted.
• Deliver legal advice, conduct research, provide brief services, and prepare confirmation letters and self-help resources.
• Examine documents such as durable powers of attorney and letters of guardianship.
• Identify the need for extended legal services and coordinate referrals within Bay Area Legal Services and to external legal referral partners.
• Ensure accurate client records are maintained using Bay Area's legal case management system.
• Assist in the creation and revision of legal advice and brief service letters, instructional materials, and other documentation.
• Contribute to the overall functioning of the Veterans Legal Helpline.
• Must be admitted to the Florida Bar and maintain good standing.
• A minimum of four years of experience as a staff attorney or equivalent practice background.
• Outstanding communication abilities.
• Capability to collaborate closely with other team members.
• Proficient in interviewing clients to ascertain critical facts related to the nature and severity of legal issues.
• Ability to take on significant responsibilities and perform effectively in an independent, yet closely monitored setting.
• Openness to undertake substantial management responsibilities.
• Experience in general legal practice is preferred.
• Background in legal services is preferred.
• Experience and/or capability to supervise and collaborate closely with others.
• Compassionate understanding of the social, economic, and legal challenges faced by individuals with limited access to legal services.
• U.S. Veteran status is preferred.
• Part-time schedule of up to 29 hours.
