Packaging Engineer – Regulatory & Compliance Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Oversee the company's packaging compliance and regulatory strategy, with an initial emphasis on the European Union Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

• Act as the organizational subject matter expert on packaging regulatory compliance.

• Facilitate cross-functional collaboration to ensure that products and packaging in all markets adhere to current and future regulatory standards.

• Formulate a global strategy aimed at reducing or eliminating packaging materials.

• Implement reusable transport packaging when the logistics model permits.

• Promote the use of materials with recycled content.

• Encourage designs that consider the actual end-of-life recycling process.

• Steer clear of challenging-to-recycle laminates, coatings, and mixed-material constructions.

• Standardize packaging components across GE Vernova businesses.

• Direct the enterprise implementation strategy for the EU PPWR at GE Vernova.

• Keep track of European packaging legislation and convert requirements into actionable business processes.

• Create and maintain the PPWR compliance roadmap, which includes milestones, resource needs, and implementation schedules.

• Offer technical expertise on packaging sustainability regulations, covering recyclability, recycled content, packaging minimization, labeling, and documentation.

• Organize teams to identify compliance gaps and execute corrective measures.

• Partner with engineering teams to integrate regulatory requirements into product and packaging design standards.

• Work closely with sourcing and suppliers to verify that packaging materials and documentation meet regulatory requirements.

• Establish governance processes, metrics, dashboards, and executive reporting for PPWR and future EPR compliance.

• Align corporate packaging specifications, procedures, and design guidelines with global packaging-related regulations.

• Conduct packaging compliance risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies.

• Assist with internal and external packaging compliance audits alongside the Supplier Quality Engineering team.

• Create training materials and deliver educational sessions for engineering, sourcing, manufacturing, and commercial teams.

• Interact with industry associations, regulatory bodies, and external consultants regarding regulatory changes and best practices.

• Offer strategic insights to senior leadership concerning regulatory risks, implementation priorities, and investment requirements.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Supply Chain, Packaging Engineering, or a related technical field.

• Over 10 years of experience in regulatory compliance, packaging engineering, product compliance, sustainability, or a related area.

• Proven experience in interpreting and implementing complex international regulations.

• Strong project and program management skills with a focus on leading cross-functional initiatives.

• Exceptional communication and executive presentation abilities.

• Experience in influencing stakeholders across various business functions without direct authority.

• Capacity to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced global environment.

• Legally authorized to work in the United States.

• Desired: Familiarity with European environmental regulations, including PPWR, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), or packaging directives.

• Desired: Understanding of packaging design, packaging materials, recyclability standards, and sustainable packaging practices.

• Desired: Background in manufacturing, energy, industrial equipment, or other highly regulated sectors.

• Desired: Knowledge of lifecycle assessment (LCA), circular economy principles, and sustainability reporting.

• Desired: Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent program management experience.
