This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Oversee the editorial strategy, production, and daily operations of the AORN Journal.

• Manage Journal content and lead the editorial team from the planning stages through to distribution.

• Ensure that Journal content is precise, relevant, timely, valuable, and aligns with the needs of readers and stakeholders.

• Review and refine feature articles, columns, special reports, and other Journal materials.

• Act as the handling editor for the President’s Message column.

• Choose and assign content for each monthly issue.

• Develop and oversee workflow schedules for Journal team members.

• Monitor and manage the annual page budget.

• Create and maintain the annual editorial calendar for the Journal.

• Plan and assist in the development of Periop Briefing content.

• Provide monthly issue lineups and facilitate cover image approvals.

• Build and manage web assets for Journal webpages and the homepage.

• Oversee podcast selection, distribution, and invoicing.

• Identify and implement improvements in processes related to author communications, guidelines, outreach, peer review, and associated workflows.

• Track and manage manuscripts within the manuscript and peer-review platform.

• Oversee the export and transfer of articles to the publisher.

• Establish collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including AORN departments, the publisher, and the ad sales team.

• Co-manage proof reviews for monthly issues and document corrections in the final stages.

• Manage content coverage before and after conferences, including interviews, highlights, posters, and award winners.

• Coordinate necessary assets for layouts.

• Recruit, train, and evaluate the performance of the Journal editorial team.

• Hold regular meetings with the Editor-in-Chief and publisher teams.

• Manage the Journal's expense budget and related invoices.

• Troubleshoot issues related to print and digital editions with the publisher.

• Identify and develop new content features for the Journal.

• Collaborate with ad sales on content relevant to advertisers and explore new advertising opportunities.

• Create and manage statements of work and contracts for editorial freelancers.

• Coordinate the requirements, schedules, and payments for content projects.

• Assist in leading Publications department activities for the annual AORN Expo & Conference.

• Prepare and present presentations as needed.

• Support the Editor-in-Chief in planning, executing, assessing, and enhancing the editorial content of the AORN Journal.

• Perform additional duties as assigned.


⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Publishing, or a related field is required.

• At least 6 years of relevant experience in publishing, including a role as a Journal managing editor.

• Proven strong skills in writing, editing, and proofreading.

• Experience in project and team management.

• A minimum of 1 year of experience in a team leadership or management role.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.

• Proficient in professional Adobe software.

• Familiarity with manuscript management systems.

• Exceptional attention to detail.

• Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.

• Strong time management, organizational, and prioritization skills.

• Capability to work both collaboratively and independently.

• Excellent communication skills.

• Ability to foster positive relationships with AORN members, staff, and partners.

• Ability to exemplify and enforce organizational values.

• Regular use of computers, Microsoft Teams, and other business technology tools is expected.

• Travel may be necessary to support departmental and Association activities.
