This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Oversee the daily publishing operations for thegrio.com
• Conduct daily and monthly news meetings, establishing priorities across various domains including news, politics, entertainment, lifestyle, and business
• Act as the editorial point of contact for staff writers, contributors, and freelancers
• Make critical decisions regarding coverage, aggregation, and timing for breaking news
• Ensure accuracy, sourcing, fairness, and corrections; escalate any legal or sensitivity concerns
• Perform line-editing and structural editing on news articles, features, essays, explainers, and video-related content
• Edit to align with theGrio's culturally fluent and direct voice
• Write and revise headlines, decks, and social media content that are optimized for search engines and audience engagement
• Uphold and enforce the house style guide
• Provide writers with constructive feedback for improvement
• Assess pitches, approve assignments, generate story ideas, and manage freelance projects
• Create a strategic mix of breaking news, service pieces, evergreen content, original stories, and significant events
• Manage the editorial calendar and plan for long-term coverage
• Collaborate with social media, newsletter, audience development, and commerce teams
• Utilize GA4, Google Search Console, Chartbeat, Google Trends, and social listening tools to guide assignments and enhance performance
• Monitor metrics such as pageviews, engaged time, returning readers, newsletter conversion, and revenue-related page performance
• Conduct weekly performance reviews for editorial leadership
• Experiment with headlines, images, publishing timings, and formats, documenting insights gained
• Employ AI tools for research synthesis, transcription, headline and SEO variations, summaries, alt text, tagging, metadata, style checks, and structural feedback
• Develop AI-assisted editorial workflows, train writers and editors, and enforce a thorough review and verification process
• Assist in shaping and maintaining standards for AI usage and disclosure
• Keep track of emerging tools and advocate for those enhancing quality or efficiency
• Collaborate with the Chief Content Officer and editorial leadership to devise coverage strategies
• Partner with social media, newsletters, ad sales, and commerce teams
• Uphold editorial standards for sponsored, branded, and partner content
• 5+ years of experience in digital editorial
• A minimum of 1–2 years of experience in assigning and editing others' work
• Proven excellence as an editor, including restructuring drafts, line-editing, and copy-editing
• In-depth, current understanding of Black culture, politics, and media
• Familiarity with theGrio's audience
• Proficiency in WordPress, Monday.com, and Slack
• Working knowledge of SEO principles and audience analytics
• Ability to utilize GA4 or Chartbeat to determine editorial actions
• Comfort with AI production tools and the discernment to know when not to employ them
• Strong news judgment, particularly under deadline pressure
• Organizational discipline in managing a calendar, freelance budget, and multiple stories
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
• Preferred: experience at a national digital news or cultural brand
• Preferred: background in managing freelance networks and contributor budgets
• Preferred: knowledge of social media production, distribution, and video workflows
• Preferred: experience in building or documenting editorial processes
• Preferred: background in politics, entertainment, business, lifestyle, or sports
• Preferred: enthusiasm for Black media and culture and alignment with theGrio's mission
