Manager, Software Engineering – AI Tools

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Oversee the people, capabilities, and operational environment supporting AI2IO's expanding AI platform and agent ecosystem

• Act as the formal people manager for all engineers and AI Engineer Technical Leads within the AI Tools team

• Conduct one-on-one meetings, establish expectations, provide constructive feedback, perform performance evaluations, and plan for professional growth

• Enhance team capabilities through training, pairing, assignments, mentoring, recruitment, and onboarding

• Maintain awareness of capacity, essential skills, dependencies, succession risks, and staffing requirements

• Ensure that staffing, role clarification, decision-making processes, tools, and organizational support facilitate sustainable delivery

• Collaborate with Technical Leads and Project Managers regarding delivery health, risks, dependencies, capacity, and recovery strategies

• Convert AI strategy and architectural direction into actionable objectives, contextual information, capability requirements, dependencies, risks, and ready-for-intake tasks

• Engage in discussions with developers and coordinate intake across AI specialists, software engineers, delivery partners, and leadership

• Foster workforce capabilities across AI application engineering, agents, semantic engineering, ontology and taxonomy, data science, knowledge graphs, data retrieval, data pipelines, evaluation, responsible AI, governance, platform operations, and software engineering

• Advocate for responsible AI, data governance, access control, evaluation, observability, model risk management, knowledge quality, and operational practices

• Cultivate healthy team practices that encourage open discussions about risks, uncertainties, mistakes, disagreements, workload issues, and alternative perspectives

• Direct hiring processes, structured selection, interviewer calibration, candidate recommendations, onboarding, and retention risk management

• Maintain clear boundaries with Technical Leads, Architects, Project Managers, Product Owners, and Business Analysts

• Enhance performance management, career development, hiring, onboarding, workforce planning, team operational practices, and leadership continuity

• Contribute to department-level capability planning, organizational design, role definition, career frameworks, cross-team staffing, leadership development, and organizational change initiatives

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven professional experience in leading, managing, architecting, or delivering production AI or LLM platforms or applications

• Strong fluency in agent systems, semantic engineering, data retrieval, data science, data engineering, data governance, knowledge graphs, evaluation, responsible AI, and production AI operations

• Demonstrated ability to translate intricate technical or architectural guidance into organizational context, capability requirements, risks, dependencies, and actionable team insights

• Experience in managing performance, providing difficult feedback, recognition, development, evaluations, promotions, and addressing sustained performance concerns

• Proven track record in managing engineers and technical leaders while maintaining clear authority for AI Engineer Technical Leads, Architects, Product Owners, Business Analysts, and Project Managers

• Experience with workforce planning, hiring, skill-gap analysis, onboarding, retention strategies, succession planning, and staffing recommendations for specialized teams

• Adequate software engineering foundation to evaluate application architecture, APIs, data, identity, security, testing, CI/CD, observability, dependencies, delivery, support, and operational risks

• Experience in supporting responsible AI, data governance, access control, evaluation, observability, or model risk practices

• Ability to convey complex AI and data concepts to AI specialists, software teams, product and delivery partners, and leadership

• Experience managing distributed or remote teams while enhancing team practices, documentation, and leadership continuity

• Exceptional interpersonal, written, verbal, coaching, facilitation, conflict resolution, and organizational judgment skills

• Experience managing teams that create production AI platforms, agent frameworks, knowledge graphs, semantic layers, retrieval systems, or AI-enabled enterprise applications

• Hands-on experience in AI architecture, LLM application development, data science, data engineering, ontology or taxonomy design, graph technologies, or semantic engineering

• Familiarity with Azure AI Foundry, Azure OpenAI, Semantic Kernel, Azure AI Search, Python agent frameworks, Microsoft Azure, C#/.NET, or comparable enterprise AI platforms

• Experience in applying AI to AEC, commissioning, engineering design, proposal development, document-intensive workflows, or domain-specific business processes

• Experience in developing Technical Leads, AI specialists, data professionals, or emerging technical leaders

• Over 8 years of professional experience in software engineering, AI engineering, data engineering, data science, or closely related technical delivery roles

• At least 2 years of formal people management experience within a software or technology organization

• A Bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent experience is preferred

• Willingness to travel up to 5%, potentially to any or all 50 US states
