This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.

📋 Description

• Deliver technical support services by utilizing machine learning for the development and testing of Navy Numerical Weather Prediction.

• Assess emerging high-resolution AI weather prediction systems tailored for Navy-relevant maritime contexts.

• Create a high-resolution, multi-year COAMPS-based regional weather reanalysis dataset focused on the Western Pacific.

• Refine and integrate a GraphCast-based global machine learning weather model into FNMOC operations.

• Analyze additional new machine learning weather models.

• Oversee the creation of a lightweight regional machine learning model aimed at enhancing maritime decision-making and forecasting.

• Explore physical processes, air-sea fluxes, and boundary-layer effects that influence the multiscale predictability of atmospheric rivers.

• Utilize Navy prediction systems, machine learning models, and targeted field observations such as dropsondes and buoys to enhance the operational suitability of high-impact weather forecasting.

• Conduct work in compliance with DSRC usage policies, security protocols, and Government-furnished technical guidance.


⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree with two or more years of experience; a Master's degree with no relevant experience; or a PhD.

• A PhD in Atmospheric Sciences or a related scientific or engineering discipline.

• At least 3 years of proven research experience in applying machine learning models to probabilistic weather forecasting.

• Experience in evaluating forecast skill and identifying systematic biases in NWP reforecasts.

• Proficiency in improving decision-making under recognized regime-dependent uncertainty.

• Experience in assessing AI climate emulators for reproducing and forecasting stratosphere-troposphere coupling.

• Proficient in programming languages such as Python, R, and SQL.

• Familiarity with tools and platforms including AWS, Git/GitHub, high-performance computing (HPC), GPU-accelerated computing, ERA5/ERA-I, ECMWF and UFS reforecast, along with AI-based climate/weather emulators like GraphCast and ACE2.

• Completion of T3 Security Investigation is required for full access to government IT systems.

• Preferred: experience in publishing peer-reviewed scientific literature, software documentation, guidebooks, and/or handbooks.

• Preferred: experience with high-performance computing.
