This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Michigan, +2 more states.
• Create, enhance, and refine machine learning models that support Torc's perception systems.
• Take ownership of model development and delivery for specific perception problem areas, encompassing data preparation, training, evaluation, and integration.
• Write high-quality Python and PyTorch code suitable for scalable training, evaluation, and inference workflows.
• Assess model performance, identify failure modes, and troubleshoot issues to enhance robustness, accuracy, and generalization.
• Develop and assess perception models utilizing multi-modal sensor data, particularly focusing on camera-based and 3D perception systems.
• Collaborate with software engineers, infrastructure teams, and autonomy engineers to seamlessly integrate perception models into production software systems.
• Optimize training pipelines, data workflows, experimentation tools, and developer processes.
• Engage in model architecture discussions and offer technical recommendations.
• Lead small technical initiatives or model components with support from senior engineers.
• Provide support and mentorship to Machine Learning Engineer I team members.
• Document technical work, evaluation outcomes, and design decisions.
• A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Machine Learning, or a related technical field with over 3 years of relevant industry experience, OR a Master's degree with at least 1 year of relevant experience, or equivalent practical experience.
• Proven experience in developing machine learning models for computer vision, perception, robotics, autonomous systems, or a closely related field.
• Strong programming capabilities in Python and PyTorch, including the ability to write maintainable, production-quality machine learning code.
• Familiarity with training, evaluating, and enhancing deep learning models using large-scale datasets.
• Experience with image-based and/or 3D perception systems.
• A solid grasp of deep learning architectures applicable to perception applications.
• Experience in debugging model behavior, analyzing performance metrics, and suggesting practical improvements.
• Capacity to independently carry out complex machine learning tasks within well-defined problem areas.
• Experience in cross-functional collaboration to integrate machine learning models into broader software systems.
• Strong problem-solving abilities in an environment characterized by evolving technical challenges and requirements.
• Bonus: Experience in autonomous driving, robotics, or ADAS perception systems.
• Bonus: Familiarity with LiDAR, point cloud processing, sensor fusion, BEV representations, temporal perception models, video-based learning, C++, ROS, robotics software development, production ML deployment, distributed training, perception evaluation frameworks, ML tooling, or ownership of technical initiatives.
