This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.
• Conduct linguistic analyses on extensive datasets.
• Analyze linguistic errors in AI model outputs and pinpoint recurring and significant error categories.
• Develop and refine guidelines for human annotation and various AI projects, including translation tasks.
• Engage in typological and sociolinguistic research across a multitude of languages, emphasizing both similarities and differences.
• Execute linguistic analyses for Responsible AI, addressing issues such as toxic language, hate speech, gender bias, and other cultural biases in highly multilingual environments.
• Perform literature reviews in linguistics on topics related to NLP and summarize the insights gained.
• Assess vendor delivery quality, identify error patterns, and offer constructive feedback.
• Provide expertise on linguistic knowledge encompassing typology, morpho-syntax, sociolinguistics, classification, phonetics/phonology, and pragmatics.
• Collaborate with and reach out to native speakers across various languages.
• Present findings from linguistic analyses to engineers and research scientists.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in business and research contexts.
• Near-native or native proficiency in a language other than English, particularly from the Dravidian or Bantu language families/groups; proficiency in Swahili is advantageous.
• Near-native or native proficiency in English.
• Familiarity with additional languages is beneficial.
• Proficiency in a low-resource language is highly regarded.
• Proficient in Python coding.
• Capable of querying databases using SQL.
• Experience with other programming languages for data analysis is a plus.
• Ability to navigate complex requests and perform well under pressure.
• Strong capacity for independent work, prioritizing tasks, planning, tracking progress, and reporting updates.
• Education or training in project management is advantageous.
• Self-motivation is essential.
• Familiarity with international language-classification standards is valued.
• A completed PhD in Linguistics or a related discipline is required; enrollment in a program is not acceptable.
• A graduate degree in Literature or English does not qualify as a substitute.
• A degree in Computer Science with a focus on NLP is not an acceptable substitute.
• Strong understanding of language typology, syntax, morphology, sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, writing systems, pragmatics, and phonology.
• Some experience in applying fundamental Natural Language Processing techniques.
• 0–3 years of relevant experience.
• Experience in cross-functional collaboration.
• Experience working with machine learning, NLP, or software engineers, or data scientists.
• Contributions to research publications are preferred.
• Ideally, no known conflicts of interest in machine translation, ASR, TTS, or LLM research.
