This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Conduct linguistic analyses on extensive datasets.

• Analyze linguistic errors in AI model outputs to identify frequent and critical error categories.

• Develop and update guidelines for human annotation and various AI projects, including translation initiatives.

• Carry out typological and sociolinguistic research across multiple languages, highlighting both similarities and differences.

• Execute linguistic analyses for Responsible AI, focusing on issues like toxic language, hate speech, gender bias, and other cultural biases in multilingual contexts.

• Perform literature reviews on NLP-related topics and compile summaries of findings.

• Evaluate vendor delivery quality, recognize error patterns, and offer actionable feedback.

• Provide expertise on linguistic subjects such as typology, morpho-syntax, sociolinguistics, classification, phonetics/phonology, and pragmatics.

• Engage with and collaborate alongside native speakers of various languages.

• Present findings from linguistic analyses to engineers and research scientists.

⛳️ Requirements

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, particularly in business and research contexts.

• Near-native or native fluency in a language other than English, specifically from the Dravidian or Bantu language families; proficiency in Swahili is advantageous.

• Near-native or native proficiency in English.

• Familiarity with additional languages is a plus; proficiency in a low-resource language is highly regarded.

• Proficiency in coding with Python is required.

• Ability to query databases using SQL is essential.

• Knowledge of other programming languages utilized for data analysis is beneficial.

• Capability to independently navigate complex requests and perform effectively under pressure.

• Strong organizational skills to work independently, prioritize tasks, plan, track progress, and report outcomes.

• Education or training in project management fundamentals is desirable.

• Self-motivation is essential.

• Familiarity with international language-classification standards is valued.

• Completion of a PhD in Linguistics or a related discipline; enrollment in a PhD program is not acceptable.

• Specialization or background in corpus linguistics is a plus.

• Experience in fieldwork is an added advantage.

• A graduate degree in Literature or English is not considered an adequate substitute.

• A degree in Computer Science with a focus on NLP is not regarded as an appropriate substitute.

• Solid understanding of language typology, syntax, morphology, sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, writing systems, pragmatics, and phonology.

• Some experience with fundamental Natural Language Processing techniques is required.

• 0–3 years of relevant experience.

• Experience in cross-functional collaboration.

• Familiarity with working alongside machine learning engineers, NLP specialists, software engineers, or data scientists.

• Experience contributing to research publications.

• Ideally, no known conflicts of interest in areas such as machine translation, ASR, TTS, or LLM research.
