Lead Software Engineer – AI

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in District of Columbia, +8 more states.

📋 Description

• Architect and manage the comprehensive design of CenterWell's AI systems, incorporating LLM-driven clinical tools, RAG pipelines, harnesses, agent-based workflows, and intelligent automation.

• Collaborate with the broader engineering team to make and effectively communicate critical technical decisions.

• Assess and choose foundational models while guiding fine-tuning processes when necessary.

• Create model evaluation frameworks that emphasize safety, accuracy, and clinical significance.

• Work alongside product managers, designers, clinicians, and data stakeholders to gain insights into care delivery workflows.

• Convert care delivery workflows into well-defined, impactful AI features.

• Ensure compliance of AI systems with HIPAA regulations and Humana's Responsible AI standards.

• Engage in AIRB and Responsible AI Council review processes as applicable.

• Standardize software quality assurance practices.

• Supervise testing and debugging processes while developing solutions.

• Investigate complaints and propose adjustments or recommendations to address complex software challenges.

• Provide strategic advice to executives regarding functional strategies.

• Apply independent judgment on intricate issues while operating with minimal supervision.

⛳️ Requirements

• B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).

• Over 8 years of software engineering experience, with at least 4 years dedicated to production AI/ML systems.

• Extensive hands-on experience with large language models and orchestration frameworks (LangChain, LlamaIndex, or equivalent).

• Strong command of Python, Typescript, and contemporary ML tools (Hugging Face, PyTorch, or similar).

• Demonstrated experience in designing and deploying RAG pipelines and vector search systems in live environments.

• Familiarity with model fine-tuning methods (LoRA, RLHF, instruction tuning, or equivalent).

• Experience in creating and implementing custom LLM and agent evaluation frameworks, including automated evaluation pipelines, benchmark construction, and large-scale output quality assessment.

• Proven track record in designing and developing multi-agent AI systems, encompassing agent orchestration, tool utilization, and sandboxed execution environments.

• Demonstrated ownership of complex AI systems from architecture to production operation.

• Knowledge of HIPAA requirements and secure management of protected health information (PHI).

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Practical experience with AI-assisted development tools and LLM coding harnesses (Claude Code, Pi Agent, Cursor, Codex, or similar).

• Must reside near one of the designated IT locations: NYC, NY; Louisville, KY; Tampa, FL; Fort Lauderdale, FL; Dallas/Frisco, TX; Boston, MA; Washington, D.C.; Atlanta, GA; Nashville, TN; Chicago, IL; or Charlotte, NC.

• Home internet service must support a minimum of 25 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload speeds.

• Must work from a dedicated space free from interruptions to safeguard member PHI/HIPAA information.

• Preferred: Experience in healthcare, clinical informatics, or similarly regulated industries.

• Preferred: Familiarity with clinical NLP, medical coding, or EHR/FHIR data standards.

• Preferred: Experience managing AI systems at scale on AWS, Azure, or GCP.
