
Lead Applied Scientist – Public Sector Investigations

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Colorado, +3 more states.
• Establish the technical direction for the public-sector investigations workstream.
• Select technical methodologies, organize scientific tasks, and ensure coherence among contributors.
• Lead scientific initiatives without direct management by reviewing designs and evaluations, enhancing quality standards, and resolving complex issues.
• Oversee AI system preparedness from problem definition through evaluation, error analysis, efficacy studies, and production oversight.
• Act as the primary escalation point for challenging technical decisions.
• Create initial prototypes with specialized teams and drive initiatives from concept to evidence.
• Transition work from proof of concept to large-scale production.
• Collaborate with product teams, engineers, designers, and embedded legal experts.
• Manage comprehensive scientific efforts for FOIA, public-records workflows, and governmental investigations.
• Design retrieval and review systems along with evaluation standards to ensure complete, accurate, and defensible responses.
• Master's degree or PhD in computer science or a related quantitative field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in applied AI/ML.
• Eligibility for a US Public Trust clearance.
• Familiarity with FOIA exemptions, PII management, and redaction processes.
• Extensive applied AI/ML experience and deployment knowledge.
• Experience in specifying, prototyping, and launching AI systems in collaboration with engineering teams.
• Proficiency in modern AI sufficient to guide others' efforts and evaluate system integrity.
• Capability to lead data analysis and design studies grounded in evidence.
• Strong software engineering acumen.
• A proactive ownership mentality extending beyond immediate responsibilities.
• Experience with government data or public-records is a plus.
• Interest in legal technology and the justice sector is desirable.
• Familiarity with information retrieval systems is advantageous.
• Experience developing agentic harnesses is beneficial.
• Proven track record in deploying reliable AI systems at scale is favorable.
