Lead Application Modernization Consultant

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Lead a dynamic agile delivery team or oversee a significant workstream within a larger program, taking ownership of technical outcomes and enhancing the developer experience while ensuring that solutions achieve measurable business results for clients.

• Manage technical and delivery risks within the project scope, actively identifying, tracking, and mitigating risks associated with legacy dependencies, migration patterns, emerging technologies, and AI-assisted methods.

• Stay actively involved in architecture, design, and development, while supervising multiple work packages and guaranteeing alignment with established architectures, engineering standards, and Ensono best practices.

• Facilitate application modernization by evaluating legacy codebases, creating application and capability inventories, and recommending strategies such as rehosting, refactoring, re-platforming, retiring, retaining, or replacing.

• Create assessments and target-state designs that provide clients with a clear roadmap from legacy environments to contemporary solutions.

• Lead client discovery and planning initiatives to articulate problem statements, business outcomes, success criteria, technical constraints, and delivery priorities.

• Advocate for specification-driven development by documenting requirements, architectural intentions, non-functional expectations, architecture decision records, and acceptance criteria.

• Promote a modern developer experience through the effective and responsible utilization of AI-assisted tools.

• Maintain sound engineering judgment and accountability, ensuring that architectural and delivery decisions are transparent and well-documented.

• Provide technical leadership within the Connected Services competency, setting benchmarks for engineering quality, delivery, and developer experience.

• Enhance Connected Services standards, documentation, and reusable modernization patterns.

• Assist in discovery, assessments, and pre-sales activities as required.

• Mentor and coach engineers in modern development practices, including the responsible use of AI assistants and agents.

• Cultivate a collaborative and psychologically safe environment that prioritizes intent, quality, accountability, and continuous learning.

⛳️ Requirements

• 7+ years of progressive experience in software engineering, application development, or related fields, including 3+ years in application modernization, cloud architecture, or technical delivery leadership.

• Proven experience in leading the modernization of large-scale, complex, high-availability applications, including cloud-native and microservices architectures.

• Hands-on expertise in at least one mainstream programming language, such as Java, .NET, or Python, with the capability to analyze and reason through legacy codebases.

• Experience in assessing legacy application portfolios, building application inventories, and recommending modernization strategies such as rehosting, refactoring, re-platforming, retiring, retaining, or replacing.

• Experience in leading solution design and translating business requirements into technical architectures, specifications, architecture decision records, acceptance criteria, and actionable delivery plans.

• Strong background in designing distributed systems on platforms like Azure, AWS, or GCP, encompassing architectural trade-offs, scalability, availability, performance, and other non-functional requirements.

• Experience in establishing engineering standards and quality practices, including automation, testing, documentation, quality gates, and reusable development patterns.

• Proven ability to identify and manage technical, architectural, and delivery risks throughout the software development lifecycle.

• Experience with AI-assisted development tools for code analysis, development, testing, documentation, or modernization while ensuring engineering oversight and accountability.

• Demonstrated experience in providing technical leadership, coaching, and mentorship to engineers while maintaining responsibility for quality and delivery.

• Strong client-facing communication skills, capable of providing clear technical guidance, explaining architectural choices, and aligning teams around intended outcomes.

• Proven track record of owning technical outcomes, including clear documentation, continuous improvement, and the development of reusable engineering assets.
