Java Engineer, AI Enabled – Java 21, Spring Boot, LangChain4j

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Portugal.

📋 Description

• Create and implement scalable microservices and AI-driven applications utilizing Java 17/21, Spring Boot, and contemporary AI orchestration frameworks.

• Incorporate Large Language Models into corporate applications via robust REST APIs.

• Guarantee the reliability, security, observability, and maintainability of AI-driven systems.

• Design autonomous AI agents capable of multi-step reasoning, tool orchestration, and memory management.

• Build AI-enhanced backend services, autonomous AI agents, and LLM integrations.

• Work collaboratively with product managers, frontend developers, data teams, and backend engineers in cross-functional Agile teams.

• Provide high-quality AI-powered solutions for enterprise retail technology.

⛳️ Requirements

• At least 7 years of professional experience in software engineering.

• Extensive experience in developing backend applications with Java 17 or Java 21.

• Strong background in Spring Boot and microservices architecture.

• Practical experience in designing and implementing Agentic AI solutions.

• Familiarity with Spring AI or LangChain4j for AI orchestration.

• Hands-on experience integrating Large Language Models (LLMs) into enterprise applications.

• Proficiency in consuming and developing RESTful APIs.

• In-depth knowledge of Prompt Engineering, prompt optimization, and prompt lifecycle management.

• Experience in implementing reliable AI systems, including observability, guardrails, rate limiting, fallback strategies, and secure integrations.

• Excellent communication and collaboration skills in cross-functional Agile teams.

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.

• Proficient in English at a B2 (Upper Intermediate) level or above.

• Experience integrating Azure Copilot or other commercial AI platforms is a plus.

• Understanding of AI memory management and multi-agent architectures is preferred.

• Experience with technical, API, and architecture documentation is advantageous.

• Background in enterprise-scale or retail technology environments is beneficial.

• Familiarity with AI governance, security, and responsible AI best practices is desirable.

• Experience working alongside mobile application development teams is preferred.
