IT & Security Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of accounts, devices, identity and access management, onboarding and offboarding, the FAR.Labs office network, and daily IT support.

• Address and resolve identified security vulnerabilities based on risk assessment, including access controls, endpoint hardening, data protection, data governance, and vendor and application risk.

• Create self-service infrastructure and processes in collaboration with Business Operations and other teams to minimize manual tasks.

• Collaborate with leaders across Research, Operations, Futures, and Communications to ensure teams operate securely.

• Recruit, manage, and nurture an on-site IT Coordinator.

• Define and shape the IT and security team as the inaugural member.

• Clearly communicate changes, manage organizational transitions, and establish feedback mechanisms post-deployment.

• Report directly to the COO and work closely with the Head of Research Acceleration, who oversees research compute and cluster infrastructure.

⛳️ Requirements

• Experience in IT and security within a technical organization of approximately 30 to 150 individuals, preferably as the initial or sole person in this role.

• Proficient in terminal operations and capable of coding.

• Prioritize automation over manual processes.

• History of redesigning systems to tackle root issues and prevent repetitive requests.

• Hands-on security experience driven by threat models.

• Implemented and managed core identity and device infrastructure, including MDM and SSO.

• Quick and service-oriented.

• Effective communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Regularly utilize LLMs and have insights into their utility and limitations.

• Experience or a strong interest in AI safety or security.

• Hired, managed, or mentored a junior colleague.

• Engagement with security outside of work, such as maintaining a home lab, participating in capture-the-flag competitions, side projects, or attending security conferences.

• Experienced in obtaining SOC 2 Type 2 certification and ensuring compliance with GDPR.

• Background in startups, agile nonprofits, or high-growth teams.

• Experience in a research organization, deep-tech startup, or similarly technical environment.
