Head of Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Portugal, +5 more countries.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the architecture for the organizational brain and individual brain, encompassing data ingestion, knowledge storage, retrieval, agents, and integrations with Claude and other LLMs.

• Engage in hands-on coding where it has the most significant impact.

• Design systems for access control, data retention and deletion, GDPR compliance, and multi-tenancy.

• Construct MCP servers and connectors for Slack, Google Workspace, Asana, HRIS, DWH, ERP, and other company systems to facilitate client self-service.

• Lead intricate technical discussions.

• Manage the technical aspects of deployments.

• Transform client-specific solutions into products to reduce the need for repeated custom work.

• Act as the ultimate technical escalation point.

• Oversee cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, observability, and security across AWS/GCP and Cloudflare.

• Manage the data stack, which includes Redshift, MotherDuck/DuckDB, ETL processes, and large-scale migrations.

• Oversee platform expenses, including token and inference costs, subscriptions, and vendor negotiations.

• Recruit, develop, and dismiss members of the engineering team.

• Foster an engineering culture that emphasizes ownership of outcomes and minimizes day-to-day management.

• Utilize AI agents such as Claude Code as the primary working tool and establish them as the main resources for the team.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of experience in software engineering, including at least 4 years in roles such as CTO, VP of Engineering, Head of Engineering, or Principal/Staff Engineer at a product company or a strong startup.

• Proven experience in building systems from the ground up to production with actual users and real load, actively involved in the process rather than solely leading teams.

• Extensive hands-on experience with running LLMs in production, including agents, RAG, tool usage and MCP, evaluations, and cost management.

• Strong background in backend architecture and data engineering, including distributed systems, integrations, data stores, security, and access control.

• Experience in managing an engineering team, which includes hiring and dismissing personnel.

• Capability to articulate technical decisions to non-technical executives at client organizations and gain their support.

• Proficiency in English.

• Good working knowledge of the Russian language.

• Experience in B2B SaaS, enterprise deployments, or forward-deployed engineering.

• Familiarity with organizational data such as HRIS, ERP, finance, and the organizational structure.
