Head of Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Build and expand the engineering team for a government workflow platform.

• Take ownership of the engineering team, technical execution, and delivery accountability.

• Actively contribute to the codebase and resolve complex technical challenges.

• Lead, mentor, and develop full-time engineers, contractors, and an offshore agency partner.

• Conduct one-on-one meetings and provide career coaching, set expectations, manage team capacity, and cultivate team culture.

• Establish priorities, remove obstacles for the team, oversee delivery commitments, and make adjustments as necessary.

• Be responsible for platform architecture and decisions regarding technical debt.

• Create documented technical and execution plans while communicating trade-offs to executives.

• Set standards for code reviews, testing, deployment safety, delivery, and reliability metrics.

• Manage uptime, incident response, and the on-call structure.

• Collaborate with InfoSec and Compliance to ensure security and compliance posture.

• Advocate for AI-assisted engineering tools and define governance for agent-generated code.

• Partner with Product, Delivery/Implementation, Customer Experience, and Solutions teams.

• Convert business priorities into engineering plans and translate technical constraints into actionable language.

• Engage with customers when necessary.

• Interview engineering candidates and assist in setting the technical hiring standards.

• Plan, forecast, and oversee team capacity.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 7 years of software development experience, with at least 2–3 years in a leadership role overseeing engineers.

• Currently involved in writing and reviewing code.

• Strong foundational knowledge in distributed systems and cloud architecture.

• Proven recent technical expertise, including architectural design, diagnosing production incidents, and correcting technical decisions.

• A history of maintaining consistent quality and delivery.

• Experience in leading a distributed team across various time zones.

• Proficiency with modern AI-assisted development tools.

• Adaptability to a growing startup environment.

• Excellent internal and external communication abilities.

• Experience in an early-to-mid-stage startup is a plus.

• Familiarity with GovTech, public-sector SaaS, or other regulated and audited environments is a plus.

• Experience in establishing or scaling an offshore engineering function is a plus.

• Must be based in the San Francisco Bay Area or Washington DC is a plus.
