Hardware Reliability Engineer III

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in North Carolina.

📋 Description

• Oversee reliability planning, evaluations, and outputs for intricate or multi-program hardware projects from inception to production and field support.

• Create and manage Reliability Program Plans, establish reliability objectives, conduct risk assessments, and report on milestones.

• Promote Design for Reliability initiatives, encompassing requirements flow-down, reliability growth strategies, and validation strategy formulation.

• Organize sessions for hardware, software, process, and design FMEA, ensuring actions are tracked to completion.

• Conduct and lead root cause investigations, teardown analyses, and failure assessments.

• Formulate and implement reliability, environmental, and accelerated life testing strategies.

• Examine field returns, complaint patterns, warranty information, and service history to pinpoint recurring failure trends and suggest corrective measures.

• Spearhead cross-functional issue resolution involving design engineering, manufacturing quality, supplier quality, testing laboratories, and service teams.

• Utilize statistical techniques and life data analysis to assess reliability risks, support forecasts, and validate results.

• Own reliability outputs throughout development and production phases.

• Guide junior engineers while contributing to improvements in reliability processes, lessons learned, and knowledge sharing initiatives.

• Facilitate ongoing enhancement of reliability techniques, laboratory practices, testing methods, and product durability throughout the product lifecycle.


⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field.

• At least 8 years of applicable experience in hardware engineering, reliability engineering, validation, test engineering, quality engineering, or a related area.

• Proficiency with complex electromechanical products, industrial machinery, outdoor electronic systems, or comparable hardware platforms.

• Solid understanding of reliability engineering techniques, including failure analysis, root cause investigation, test planning, and corrective action facilitation.

• Demonstrated experience leading FMEA initiatives and implementing reliability risk mitigation strategies across design and process functions.

• Capability to analyze technical data, interpret technical drawings and schematics, and convey findings effectively.

• Background in collaborating across engineering, quality, manufacturing, supplier, and field support teams.

• Proven ability to juggle multiple priorities, steer cross-functional discussions, and influence decisions without direct authority.

• Familiarity with Design for Reliability tools and field trial planning for cost reduction and VAVE projects.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven track record of producing clear technical documentation and recommendations.

• Preferred: experience in fuel dispensing, retail fueling, payment hardware, industrial controls, or outdoor electronic equipment sectors.

• Preferred: practical experience with Weibull analysis, FRACAS, reliability growth, accelerated testing, and statistical evaluations.

• Preferred: working knowledge of Weibull++, Minitab, JMP, RGA, or similar reliability/statistical software.

• Preferred: understanding of accelerated life testing, environmental stress testing, product qualification, and reliability validation strategies.

• Preferred: experience with optical microscopy, X-ray, cross-sectioning, SEM, CSAM, and EDX techniques.

• Preferred: familiarity with warranty analysis, management of field issues, and lifecycle reliability metrics.

• Preferred: experience mentoring engineers or leading technical initiatives.

• Professional certifications such as ASQ Certified Reliability Engineer or Certified Quality Engineer are advantageous.
