This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.
• Coordinate customs clearance requirements with customs brokers, freight forwarders, suppliers, and internal teams across more than 200 annual import transactions.
• Review customs entries and entry summaries to ensure precise classification, country of origin, declared value, duties, and tariff provisions.
• Resolve discrepancies in entries with brokers, monitor corrections, and escalate any clearance risks.
• Maintain a register of entries that links customs entries to load numbers, purchase orders, projects, and necessary documentation.
• Manage relationships with brokers and freight forwarders; assess performance and address recurring issues.
• Keep the product classification database updated with HTSUS codes, descriptions, countries of origin, rationale, and duty rates.
• Gather technical specifications and documentation for accurate tariff classification.
• Monitor changes in tariffs, CBP guidance, preferential trade programs, and Section 232/301 duties.
• Communicate tariff changes, their cost implications, and required actions to Finance and Operations teams.
• Assist with duty estimates for purchases, projects, and negotiations with suppliers.
• Review eligibility and documentation for USMCA and other preferential treatment programs.
• Reconcile Periodic Monthly Statements, coordinate customs duty payments, and track outstanding obligations.
• Monitor liquidation, correction, and protest deadlines; actively pursue refund opportunities.
• Maintain proper documentation for refunds and provide Finance with reports on duty spending, trends, and potential savings.
• Manage ACE access, importer records, CBP Forms 5106, broker powers of attorney, customs bonds, and trade documentation.
• Oversee bond sufficiency, CBP notices, audit requests, and deadlines for responses.
• Maintain customs records and prepare for audits and examinations by CBP.
• Develop customs procedures, checklists, internal controls, and audit protocols.
• Conduct audits of entries and rectify recurring documentation errors.
• Train Logistics Coordinators, Procurement, and project teams on import compliance documentation.
• Provide leadership with reports on duty spending, discrepancies, refunds, deadlines, and regulatory risks.
• Identify opportunities for tariff classification, duty-cost reduction, and process improvements.
• Escalate complex legal interpretations, trade program inquiries, and tariff disputes to brokers or trade counsel.
• A minimum of 5+ years of direct experience in customs compliance, customs brokerage, or importer compliance.
• Proven experience supporting multiple clients, suppliers, or companies, with comfort in handling various product types and geographical regions.
• Strong practical experience with ACE, PMS reconciliation, entry summaries (CBP Form 7501), HTSUS tariff classification, customs valuation, and country of origin requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to research tariff changes, exclusions, and trade program rules; effectively translating tariff changes into operational impacts and cost estimates.
• Experience with USMCA or other preferential trade program documentation and qualification.
• Proficient in Excel, data reconciliation, recordkeeping, analytical, and organizational skills; capable of managing multiple deadlines independently.
• Excellent communication skills; able to coordinate effectively with Operations, Finance, Procurement, and external partners.
• Ability to work autonomously in a remote environment and prioritize competing demands.
• Preference for candidates with a Licensed Customs Broker or Certified Customs Specialist credential.
• Preferred experience in manufacturing, industrial equipment, structural steel/aluminum products, and assembly/fabrication operations.
• Experience managing imports from Mexico and other key sourcing regions; preferred knowledge of USMCA sourcing and documentation.
• Familiarity with Chapter 99 provisions, Section 232/301 duty applications, post-entry corrections, and tariff protests is preferred.
• Experience managing multiple brokers and evaluating their performance is preferred.
• Familiarity with ERP systems such as SAP or NetSuite and customs management platforms is preferred.
