General Counsel

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Establish and oversee Optery’s legal function.

• Provide legal, regulatory, and risk-related advice to the CEO, Board of Directors, and leadership team.

• Draft, review, manage, and negotiate B2B SaaS, vendor, partnership, and various commercial agreements.

• Develop processes and systems to handle increased contract volumes effectively.

• Lead initiatives related to data privacy and regulatory compliance.

• Engage with non-compliant data brokers to ensure adherence to regulations.

• Cultivate relationships with CalPrivacy/CPPA, State Attorneys General, and Departments of Justice.

• Gather evidence of non-compliance and submit complaints to regulatory bodies.

• Assist with corporate governance, board-related matters, and equity management.

• Support financing transactions, including equity and debt instruments, as well as potential M&A activities.

• Provide guidance on employment issues, intellectual property, and risk management.

• Manage relationships with outside counsel and establish internal legal processes and policies.

• Build and develop the legal team, including future legal hires.

⛳️ Requirements

• 8–15 years of legal experience, including time at a prestigious law firm and in-house at a technology or privacy-focused organization.

• Strong proficiency in U.S. consumer data privacy law and regulatory frameworks.

• Preference for familiarity with enforcement trends related to CCPA, VCDPA, CPA, TDPSA, OCPA, and other state data privacy laws.

• Proven experience interacting with or navigating regulatory agencies such as the CPPA, Attorney General offices, Departments of Justice, or FTC.

• Solid background in commercial contracts, corporate governance, and startup equity and debt financing.

• Exceptional communicator and negotiator with a proactive and pragmatic approach.

• Commitment to consumer privacy and a strong drive to hold data brokers accountable to consumer data privacy regulations.

• Documented record of professional success and accomplishments.

• Licensed to practice law in the U.S.; California license preferred but not mandatory.
