This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and sustain the shared front-end platform that drives VA.gov.

• Create reusable front-end components, tools, libraries, and utilities.

• Enhance front-end architecture by implementing application isolation, code splitting, dependency management, and performance optimization.

• Spearhead modernization initiatives for frameworks and runtime environments.

• Draft technical design documents, discovery documents, RFCs, and implementation proposals.

• Engage in architecture review sessions.

• Establish and maintain GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines for building, testing, and deploying front-end applications.

• Develop automation for deployment, staged continuous deployment, version tagging, rollback procedures, and release management.

• Strengthen pipeline security through least-privilege permissions, OIDC authentication, dependency validation, and adherence to GitHub security best practices.

• Create deployment observability through dashboards, metrics, Slack notifications, logging, and reporting.

• Monitor, assess, and address dependency vulnerabilities.

• React promptly to software supply chain security incidents.

• Assist with Authority to Operate activities, which include SBOM generation, security documentation, and audit support.

• Optimize front-end performance using techniques such as code splitting, lazy loading, asset optimization, caching, and bundle analysis.

• Develop user interfaces that are accessible and compliant with WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508 standards, utilizing the VA Design System.

• Ensure compatibility across all supported browsers, devices, and assistive technologies.

• Aid Veteran-Facing Services teams by troubleshooting CI/CD issues and reviewing changes that impact the platform.

• Create and maintain platform documentation, migration guides, deployment documentation, and engineering best practices.

• Communicate changes to the platform and coordinate their adoption among engineering teams.

• Develop internal tools, dashboards, Slack integrations, and automation solutions.

• Participate in Agile ceremonies, cross-functional platform initiatives, and Front-End Communities of Practice.

• Mentor fellow engineers.

• Adhere to standard business hours from Monday to Friday, with occasional extended hours or weekend work depending on operational requirements.


⛳️ Requirements

• Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.

• Bachelor's Degree.

• 5 years of experience as a Frontend Engineer.

• Extensive experience in developing applications utilizing React, modern JavaScript (ES6+), and TypeScript.

• Proficient in designing reusable front-end architectures, component libraries, and shared application frameworks.

• Strong expertise with GitHub Actions or comparable CI/CD systems, including workflow creation and pipeline troubleshooting.

• Experience with automated testing at scale using Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress, Playwright, Mocha, or similar frameworks.

• Familiarity with Node.js, npm/yarn, Webpack, Vite, or similar front-end build systems.

• Experience utilizing Git and GitHub workflows in large, collaborative repositories.

• Experience with AI-assisted development tools, such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or similar technologies.

• Experience addressing dependency vulnerabilities and responding to security findings.

• Proficient in writing shell scripts or automation that supports development and deployment workflows.

• Strong understanding of responsive design, web performance optimization, accessibility, and modern browser APIs.

• U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency is required.

• Must have reliable internet service for effective telecommuting.
