Engineering Manager, Perception and Machine Learning

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Rhode Island.

📋 Description

• Lead, manage, and nurture a team of engineers specializing in perception, machine learning, sensor fusion, and software development.

• Take ownership of team planning, prioritization, execution, and delivery aligned with the Perception & ML roadmap.

• Set clear goals, responsibilities, and expectations, holding engineers accountable for their performance.

• Provide guidance on architecture and technical decisions related to computer vision, sensor fusion, tracking, detection, classification, segmentation, and other associated capabilities.

• Supervise model training, evaluation, data curation, validation, and deployment processes.

• Ensure that perception capabilities fulfill real-world performance, reliability, compute, and field-readiness standards.

• Collaborate cross-functionally with teams in Autonomy, Embedded Systems, Data, Simulation, Hardware, Product, Programs, and Field Operations.

• Convert customer, mission, and product requirements into engineering priorities and actionable plans.

• Utilize field data, testing outcomes, and operator feedback to prioritize enhancements and bridge performance gaps.

• Implement practices for design reviews, code reviews, testing, model evaluation, release readiness, and technical documentation.

• Identify and relay execution risks, dependencies, resource limitations, and technical trade-offs.

• Mentor and develop engineers through feedback, performance management, career development, and guidance.

• Recruit, interview, onboard, and retain high-caliber engineering talent.

• Promote technical excellence, ownership, collaboration, and a culture of continuous improvement.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

• 7+ years of pertinent engineering experience in perception, machine learning, computer vision, robotics, autonomy, sensor fusion, or related domains.

• 2+ years of direct management experience, preferably overseeing engineers in a highly technical setting.

• Strong technical knowledge of contemporary perception systems, including computer vision, sensor fusion, tracking, detection, classification, or ML-based scene comprehension.

• Experience in bringing ML or perception capabilities from development through to testing and deployment in real-world applications.

• Proven capability to manage engineering priorities, technical roadmaps, dependencies, and deliverables across various initiatives.

• Experience in hiring, coaching, developing, and assessing engineering talent.

• Excellent cross-functional leadership abilities with experience collaborating with software, autonomy, data, hardware, product, and field operations teams.

• Proficient in making sound decisions regarding technical performance, scheduling, resource management, risk, and product requirements.

• Strong communication skills, capable of conveying technical issues and trade-offs to both technical and non-technical audiences.

• High level of ownership, sound judgment, and comfort in fast-paced, ambiguous environments.

• U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

• Preferred: Advanced degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Vision, or a related field.

• Preferred: Prior experience managing a team focused on Perception, ML, Robotics, or Autonomy engineering.

• Preferred: Background in robotics, autonomous vehicles, defense technology, aerospace, maritime systems, or other deployed autonomous systems.

• Preferred: Experience with multimodal sensor systems such as cameras, EO/IR, radar, LiDAR, AIS, GPS/INS, or IMU.

• Preferred: Familiarity with technologies like PyTorch, TensorRT, ONNX, CUDA, MLflow, Docker, Kubernetes, NVIDIA Jetson, or similar ML and deployment tools.

• Preferred: Experience with simulation, synthetic data, annotation workflows, and large-scale perception datasets.

• Preferred: Involvement in field testing, customer demonstrations, operational evaluations, or deployed robotic systems.

• Preferred: Experience supporting government or DoD programs.

• Preferred: Active or prior security clearance.
