Engineering Manager, Notifications

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Oversee a team of full-stack engineers responsible for developing and maintaining the notifications platform, which includes Elixir services, Python backends, pubsub pipelines, and Kubernetes infrastructure.

• Establish the technical direction for notifications infrastructure, ensuring that systems scale efficiently as volume and complexity increase.

• Collaborate with Product, Design, Data Science, and Marketing teams to outline and implement the notifications roadmap.

• Leverage experimentation and metrics to enhance notification engagement, user retention, and long-term trust.

• Cultivate a high-performing team through effective hiring, coaching, and the implementation of engineering best practices.

• Collaborate with platform consumers across Discord to refine the primitives utilized by other teams to connect with users.

• Work in conjunction with engineering leadership on strategic planning and organizational improvements.

• Report directly to the Senior Engineering Manager of Growth.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of experience as a Software Engineer, with substantial time spent building and managing backend or infrastructure systems at scale.

• At least 2 years of experience in an Engineering Manager role.

• Proficiency in managing production systems built using technologies such as Elixir, Python, pubsub/streaming pipelines, and Kubernetes, with a solid understanding of reliability, throughput, and cost at scale.

• Experience working closely with product managers, designers, data scientists, and fellow engineers to define and deliver solutions.

• Proven track record of developing engineers and supporting team members in their success.

• Strong sense of ownership and the ability to discuss technical decisions thoroughly.

• Capacity to promote a culture of 80/20 thinking, rapid iteration, and high-quality delivery.

• Bonus: experience in leading shared platforms or primitives.

• Bonus: experience with shipping push notifications or re-engagement systems at a consumer scale, including considerations for deliverability, throttling, and policies.

• Bonus: full-stack experience encompassing both frontend and backend development.

• Bonus: ability to demonstrate measurable impact through experimentation and data-informed decision-making.

• Bonus: success in enhancing engagement and long-term retention via messaging or re-engagement channels.

• Familiarity with the gaming industry.

• Discord user with knowledge of core Discord communication features and workflows.
