Engineering Manager, Machine Learning – Safety

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Assemble and guide a top-tier team of ML engineers through recruitment, mentorship, and fostering a sense of ownership and impact.

• Propel the technical vision and strategy for Safety ML in partnership with Trust & Safety, Product, Policy, Legal, and Data Science teams.

• Take charge of the complete lifecycle of production safety models, which includes defining capabilities, assessing performance, and overseeing operational health.

• Oversee processes and leverage technical skills to elevate standards and ensure outstanding outcomes.

• Collaborate with Trust & Safety on label quality, golden sets, and the automation of manual investigations.

• Work alongside other Engineering Managers to enhance the Engineering organization and maintain Discord’s workplace philosophy.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of experience as a Machine Learning Engineer, Data Scientist, or Applied Scientist.

• More than 3 years of experience in an Engineering Manager role.

• Proven track record of managing a team of 5 or more engineers.

• Hands-on expertise in at least one of the following areas: abuse/fraud detection, content classification, behavioral modeling, graph-based modeling, or LLM-based classification systems.

• Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across various functions.

• Capacity to excel in ambiguous situations and tackle complex challenges.

• First-principles thinking combined with the ability to collaboratively develop practical solutions.

• Established history of deploying ML systems to production at scale.

• Enthusiasm for mentoring and leading engineers while also contributing directly to coding efforts.

• Keeps abreast of industry trends and identifies technologies to address technical challenges.
