Engineering Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Poland.

📋 Description

• Manage software engineers through regular one-on-one meetings, feedback sessions, career growth discussions, and structured development plans.

• Take charge of performance management, including setting objectives, conducting formal reviews, handling promotion cases, and addressing challenging performance discussions.

• Oversee the hiring process from defining capability requirements to conducting interviews and making final hiring choices.

• Assist new engineers with a structured onboarding process and during their probationary period.

• Guide engineers towards advancing in their careers as senior individual contributors or in technical leadership roles.

• Utilize throughput, cycle time, DORA metrics, and incident trends to pinpoint issues related to personnel, capabilities, and staffing.

• Collaborate with technical leaders and various engineering functions to ensure teams possess the necessary skills, capacity, and support.

• Challenge project estimates, comprehend technical risks, and assess engineering practices without being the primary technical owner.

• Promote healthy operational practices, including the fair distribution of on-call responsibilities.

• Recognize capability gaps, performance risks, engagement challenges, and retention issues, communicating these to engineering leadership.

• Foster continuous improvement by transforming identified issues into actionable, measurable steps.

• Spearhead initiatives in developer enablement, operational maturity, internal automation, security, or cloud efficiency.

• Contribute to the establishment of consistent engineering management standards across a distributed organization.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of professional experience in software engineering.

• At least 3 years of genuine experience in line management with software engineers.

• Proven track record in managing one-on-ones, performance evaluations, career development, hiring, and performance management.

• Experience in making tough personnel decisions, including managing underperformance and, when necessary, terminations.

• Documented success in advancing engineers to more senior roles, technical leadership positions, or broader responsibilities.

• Strong technical background for evaluating engineering quality and engaging in discussions regarding architecture, cloud systems, delivery practices, and operational risk.

• Familiarity with modern cloud-native engineering ecosystems, CI/CD practices, and software operations in production.

• A working understanding of incidents, on-call practices, observability, and production reliability.

• Acquaintance with modern AI-enabled or LLM-based products and engineering settings.

• Experience in utilizing engineering metrics and delivery data to identify challenges and guide management decisions.

• Ability to balance empathy and support with clear expectations, accountability, and direct feedback.

• Excellent communication skills and confidence in engaging with engineering, product, and operational stakeholders.

• Proficient in English and capable of effectively collaborating with distributed or international teams.

• Experience in regulated, high-availability, or enterprise environments such as fintech, banking, telecommunications, or similar fields is highly regarded.

• Strong written and spoken English skills (C1+).

• Residing within the European Union and available to work on a B2B contract.
