Engineering Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the health, output, and direction of an engineering pod comprising approximately 6–8 engineers, reporting to the Head of Engineering.

• Manage the pod’s operating system, which includes team dynamics, execution, delivery health, cross-functional collaboration, and ongoing enhancement.

• Organize and facilitate planning sessions, retrospectives, and follow-up actions.

• Define priorities, clarify ownership and expectations, and eliminate obstacles.

• Uphold standards for accountability, autonomy, psychological safety, and performance.

• Oversee roadmap execution, pinpoint stalled or inadequately defined projects, and take early action.

• Conduct weekly one-on-one meetings, offer continuous feedback, manage performance issues, foster growth, and address performance deficiencies.

• Manage the onboarding process for new engineers, ensuring meaningful work is prepared prior to their start date and providing support during their initial month.

• Maintain documentation, runbooks, and ownership delineations.

• Collaborate with the Product Manager on planning, prioritization, requirements gathering, trade-offs, and high-value challenges.

• Work alongside the Technical Lead on architecture, technical quality, risk assessment, technical decisions, and managing technical debt.

• Contribute as an individual contributor when appropriate and assist in ensuring that incidents lead to lasting improvements; on-call responsibilities are shared among the team.

• Evaluate the pod's skill set and seniority mix, recommend hiring needs, participate in candidate interviews, assist in recruitment efforts, and support succession planning.

• Communicate the health of the pod, dependencies, trade-offs, and risks to the Head of Engineering and other relevant stakeholders.

• Achieve meaningful outcomes, enhance onboarding and team development, manage quality-related risks, and empower the pod to resolve challenges independently.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in directly managing engineers — ideally 5 or more on a product or platform team, with tangible examples of performance improvements and instances where performance management was necessary.

• A credible engineering background with experience in delivering production software, reviewing pull requests, assessing design documents, and critically evaluating estimates.

• A history of enhancing delivery predictability through effective management.

• Proficient understanding of modern AI product development, encompassing evaluations, experiment design, dataset curation, and AI-assisted engineering workflows.

• Ability to navigate ambiguity and complex domains comfortably.

• Strong instincts for product partnership and the capability to engage with non-engineering stakeholders.

• Excellent written communication skills.

• Direct yet considerate approach when providing feedback.

• Experience with operational and reliability aspects, including service level objectives (SLOs), incident response, and post-incident reviews.

• Heightened awareness of security risks related to sensitive personal data.

• Experience in hiring and onboarding within a growing organization.

• Technical knowledge of TypeScript, React, Vite, Node/Express, Docker, GraphQL/Apollo, Postgres/Aurora, Turborepo/PNPM, AWS, Terraform, Pulumi, Buildkite, Datadog, CloudWatch, and Sentry.

• The position necessitates a solid understanding of production software to effectively evaluate technical plans, designs, pull requests, estimates, and technical risks.
