Electrical Engineer/Designer – Protection and Controls

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Design protection and control systems for electrical facilities in the Transmission & Distribution, Power Generation, Industrial, and Renewable Energy sectors.

• Create comprehensive protection and control design packages, which include schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, bills of materials, and supporting documentation.

• Utilize industry standards, engineering principles, and protection philosophies to deliver precise engineering outputs.

• Conduct protective relay setting calculations and configure advanced digital protection relays for utility applications.

• Develop, review, and validate protection and control philosophies, schemes, and engineering standards, covering AC/DC studies, battery and charger sizing, voltage drop, and CT burden calculations.

• Offer technical engineering support throughout construction, commissioning, testing, and field installation processes.

• Diagnose and resolve technical challenges.

• Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering, construction, commissioning, and client teams.

• Leverage knowledge of electric transmission system operations, substation equipment, system performance, maintenance practices, and protection coordination in engineering designs.

• Ensure that designs align with relevant legislation, client specifications, and industry standards, including AEUC, CSA, ANSI, IEC, IEEE, and utility guidelines.

• Assist in projects that involve Critical Infrastructure Protection requirements.

• Manage multiple engineering projects while ensuring quality, adhering to schedules, and prioritizing tasks effectively.

• Engage in design reviews, technical discussions, and initiatives for continuous improvement.

• Work with internal and external stakeholders to provide safe, reliable, and cost-effective engineering solutions.

• Report to the Discipline Lead – Protection and Controls.


⛳️ Requirements

• A degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field is mandatory; alternatively, a Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology from an accredited post-secondary institution is acceptable.

• 2–8 years of experience in the Utilities industry is preferred but not essential.

• Previous engineering or design experience in electrical facilities within the Transmission and Distribution, Power Generation, Industrial, and Renewables sectors is highly advantageous.

• Experience in construction and field installations is a plus.

• Proficient in medium/high voltage power engineering for electrical facilities in the Transmission and Distribution, Power Generation, Industrial, and Renewables sectors.

• Demonstrated ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics.

• Strong organizational capabilities with the ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently.

• Excellent analytical and troubleshooting abilities.

• Eligibility for registration with APEGGA or ASET.

• A committed team player with robust interpersonal and communication skills.

• Proven problem-solving and analytical skills with the capability to work under stringent deadlines.

• Proficient in using computer-assisted engineering and design software and tools for engineering tasks.

• Completion of pre-employment screening, which includes professional reference checks and a criminal record check.
