Director, Finance Systems – ERP

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the technical strategy and long-term architecture for Smartsheet’s financial systems ecosystem, encompassing ERP, procurement, financial planning, payments, billing, tax, revenue processes, integrations, data, automation, and AI.

• Lead, mentor, and develop the Financial Systems Engineering team.

• Act as a senior technology leader for NetSuite and ERP.

• Provide technological guidance for ERP reimplementation and modernization initiatives.

• Convert product strategy and business objectives into technical roadmaps, architectural frameworks, investment choices, and engineering plans.

• Shape the architecture for subscription, multi-year, usage-based, consumption-based, and AI-related pricing and billing models.

• Define system-of-record boundaries across CRM, product, billing, ERP, payments, tax, planning, and data platforms.

• Establish the data strategy for Finance systems, including data models, contracts, quality, lineage, reconciliation, and historical integrity.

• Collaborate with Data Engineering and Analytics to ensure Financial Systems integration with the enterprise data lake.

• Enhance data quality and observability across Quote-to-Cash and Finance workflows.

• Develop an AI strategy and assess AI-assisted and agentic capabilities for Financial Systems Engineering.

• Create automated testing and quality engineering practices across the Finance technology stack.

• Implement modern engineering practices, encompassing source control, peer review, CI/CD, environment management, testing, observability, documentation, release engineering, and operational readiness.

• Determine suitable boundaries between SaaS configuration, extensibility, APIs, integrations, automation, and custom software.

• Collaborate with Integration Engineering on scalable, observable, and resilient Finance and Quote-to-Cash integrations.

• Oversee the technical health and lifecycle of the Financial Systems portfolio.

• Conduct architecture reviews, set technical standards, and evaluate engineering metrics and platform health.

• Represent Financial Systems Engineering in executive steering committees, governance forums, and program assessments.

• Provide technical leadership across implementation partners and strategic vendors.

• Partner with Finance, Accounting, FP&A, Procurement, Tax, Revenue, Product Engineering, Sales/GTM, Data, Security, AI & Automation, and Corporate Systems.

• Balance transformation delivery with reliability, technical debt minimization, modernization, security controls, and long-term investments.

• Recruit, nurture, and retain engineering talent.

⛳️ Requirements

• 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in financial systems, enterprise application engineering, ERP, software engineering, systems architecture, or related technical fields.

• 5+ years of experience leading technical teams, including managing managers, senior engineers, architects, or other technical leaders.

• Extensive knowledge of NetSuite or similar enterprise ERP platforms.

• Proven experience leading significant ERP implementations, reimplementations, or transformation programs from architecture and design through to implementation, stabilization, and ongoing evolution.

• Strong comprehension of record-to-report, procure-to-pay, order-to-cash, billing, payments, financial planning, accounting, and revenue workflows.

• Familiarity with Coupa, Planful, Stripe, ZoneBilling, Metronome, Avalara, or equivalent technologies.

• Experience with SaaS billing and monetization architectures, including subscription and usage-based or consumption-based models.

• Strong systems thinking capabilities across ERP, CRM, product, billing, payments, integrations, data platforms, APIs, automation, and financial controls.

• Proven experience in defining technical strategy and architecture.

• Knowledge of enterprise data architecture, encompassing systems of record, data models, interfaces, contracts, quality, reconciliation, governance, lineage, and downstream consumption.

• Experience collaborating with Data Engineering or Analytics teams and integrating operational systems with Databricks, Snowflake, or similar technologies.

• Proficiency in establishing automated testing, CI/CD, source control, observability, release management, documentation, and operational readiness.

• Understanding of LLMs, agents, and intelligent automation, with appropriate financial, security, and compliance risk management.

• Strong grasp of financial controls, auditability, security, data integrity, and compliance.

• Experience managing system integrators and technology vendors during large transformation projects.

• Proven ability to partner with Product Managers and senior business leaders on roadmaps and investment strategies.

• Capability to operate from executive steering committee discussions through detailed architecture reviews.

• Ability to challenge legacy processes and architectures and lead substantial technology and operating-model change.

• Exceptional analytical, verbal, and written communication skills, along with executive presence and the ability to convey complex technology decisions.

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Finance, Business, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
