Director Engineering, Retail Media – Marketplace

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Netherlands.

📋 Description

• Establish the engineering direction for the Retail Media and Marketplace sectors.

• Determine where platforms should align or remain distinct.

• Lead and expand an engineering organization comprising approximately 40 engineers across 5–7 teams.

• Develop Engineering Managers and their respective teams.

• Shape the organization as the domains progress.

• Foster an environment that emphasizes clear ownership and autonomy.

• Take charge of delivery, reliability, architecture, and technical debt.

• Enhance engineering maturity to empower teams to operate swiftly without sacrificing quality.

• Collaborate on roadmaps with Product and Commercial leadership.

• Align engineering priorities with take rate, advertiser ROAS, seller economics, and contribution margin.

• Manage engineering relationships with external platforms, integrators, and agencies.

• Make decisions regarding build/buy/partner strategies.

• Supervise integrations, SLAs, and vendor performance.

• Report to the Executive Director of Engineering / VP of Engineering.

• Lead through two Engineering Managers.

⛳️ Requirements

• Minimum of 3 years of experience leading multiple engineering teams through managers or leads.

• Proven experience guiding organizations through significant transformations, including domain mergers, new scope introductions, or platform replacements.

• Background in developing commercial B2B platforms such as marketplaces, retail media, ad tech, payments, or seller/partner platforms.

• Experience with high-traffic and transactional systems.

• Strong technical judgment complemented by commercial acumen.

• Ability to link engineering decisions to business results.

• Confidence in partnering with senior Product and Commercial stakeholders.

• Demonstrated engineering excellence with measurable improvements achieved.

• Comfort in navigating ambiguity, external partners, and competing priorities.

• Proficient English communication skills.
