Director, AI & Machine Learning

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Develop and execute the AI and ML strategy and roadmap across R&D, clinical, medical, operations, and commercial objectives.

• Oversee advanced ML, generative AI, foundation-model, and agentic AI initiatives from opportunity identification to production implementation.

• Create production ML architecture, select platform options, establish modernization plans, reusable engineering frameworks, and quality benchmarks.

• Direct MLOps and data platform strategies, focusing on data quality, lineage, experimentation, assessment, monitoring, model registry, governance of releases, and lifecycle management.

• Advocate for responsible AI practices and model governance throughout the portfolio.

• Attract, nurture, and maintain ML engineering talent while fostering a culture of technical excellence.

• Define investment rationale, success metrics, and portfolio-level KPIs.

• Evaluate the adoption and value of scientific AI capabilities.

• Collaborate with scientists, technology leaders, data/platform teams, and departments like quality, legal, compliance, privacy, and information security.

• Craft clear technical narratives, roadmaps, recommendations, and investment strategies for senior stakeholders.

⛳️ Requirements

• Doctorate degree with 4 years of experience as a Director in AI & Machine Learning, or a Master’s degree with 8 years of experience, or a Bachelor’s degree with 10 years of experience in a similar role.

• A minimum of 4 years of direct people management and/or leadership experience in overseeing teams, projects, programs, or resource allocation.

• In-depth knowledge of AI/ML engineering and technical strategy related to scientific research applications.

• Extensive hands-on experience in software engineering and the design of production AI/ML systems.

• Proficient in scalable APIs, pipelines, cloud platforms, model serving, evaluation, observability, and sustainable architecture.

• Proven experience in directing data and MLOps capabilities, including lineage, reproducibility, validation, monitoring, drift detection, CI/CD, incident response, auditability, and model retirement.

• Capability to implement responsible AI governance, validation evidence, model documentation, risk management controls, access safeguards, and review processes.

• Record of success in building and leading high-performing technical teams.

• Strong skills in stakeholder management and building cross-functional alliances.

• Experience in framing strategies for foundation models and enterprise-wide AI adoption.

• Proven proficiency in Python and modern ML/deep-learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX.

• Familiarity with cloud and data platforms utilized for deploying AI/ML solutions at scale.
