This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Germany.
• Oversee overnight processing, address failures, and ensure a robust platform is delivered to the European team each morning.
• Manage Airflow DAGs and Python jobs on both Windows and Linux VMs, including handling failed tasks, backfilling, and managing dependencies.
• Analyze and rectify recurring issues within the on-premises Microsoft SQL Server environment.
• Utilize linked servers, OPENQUERY, and PolyBase for accessing cross-system data.
• Detect data quality issues such as outdated feeds, broken joins, and changes in source systems, and collaborate with data owners to resolve them.
• Model new source domains within the warehouse and create data models that are useful for analysts.
• Develop automated data quality checks for freshness, volume, referential integrity, and adherence to business rules.
• Optimize SQL queries, stored procedures, indexes, and execution plans.
• Enhance alerting, logging, runbooks, and automation to mitigate recurring incidents.
• Review AI-generated SQL and pipeline code, and establish tests prior to production deployment.
• Work alongside BI, analytics, and data-owning teams throughout the organization.
• A minimum of 3 years of core data engineering experience in a production setting.
• Exceptional expertise in T-SQL and Microsoft SQL Server optimization, including strategies for indexing, execution plans, query tuning, and partitioning.
• Familiarity with linked servers, OPENQUERY, and PolyBase.
• Capability to design warehouse tables and dimensional data models.
• Proficient in Python for building pipelines, transformations, and automation.
• Experience with Airflow in a production context, including authoring, operating, and debugging DAGs, scheduling, retries, backfills, dependencies, and task-failure tracing.
• Practical experience with Claude Code or a similar agentic coding tool, MCP servers, and LLM-powered workflows.
• Skill in validating AI-generated SQL and pipeline code by analyzing queries, reviewing execution plans, and ensuring outputs match source data.
• Experience with Git and GitLab, including branching, merge requests, code reviews, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Proficiency in debugging on both Windows and Linux VMs.
• Basic understanding of Azure or AWS.
• Strong English communication skills.
• Availability to consistently work from 5am to 2pm CEST, in a timezone where these hours are considered normal daytime hours, approximately GMT+4 to GMT+8.
• Experience with Microsoft Fabric, custom MCP servers or internal LLM tools, Power BI or other BI tools, and B2C/subscription business models is a plus.
