Cyber Range Content Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Create, modify, test, and publish engaging hands-on cybersecurity challenge content for the Cyber Simulations & Ranges product lineup, which includes BootUp CTF and ASAP.

• Reconfigure and transition existing challenge materials to contemporary delivery platforms, including migrating legacy BootUp CTF content to Skills Quest.

• Ensure content functionality, solvability, difficulty scaling, hint quality, and answer-key accuracy are validated prior to publication.

• Regularly update and maintain published content to ensure technical precision and relevance to current cybersecurity threats, tools, and methodologies.

• Align cybersecurity materials with DCWF, NICE, and NIST workforce development frameworks.

• Implement and adapt frameworks across various games and products, ensuring that all implementations are thoroughly documented and replicable.

• Develop, maintain, and enhance scripts, automation tools, and technical utilities for the processes of content creation, deployment, testing, and reporting.

• Contribute to the development of new tools and frameworks.

• Assist in the completion, refinement, and transition of business-unit tooling, such as RUBA.

• Act as the primary technical resource for the Cyber Simulations & Ranges business unit.

• Troubleshoot technical challenges in both live and in-development cyber range environments.

• Conduct quality assurance and testing to identify technical challenges and ensure range experiences operate as expected.

• Create and maintain technical documentation, runbooks, and handoff materials.

• Collaborate with content creators, the Senior Principal Architect, General Manager, and external content partners.

• Work alongside SANS business units, Engineering, and product stakeholders.

• Communicate updates on project status, technical issues, risks, and competing priorities.

• Raise any conflicting demands or resource limitations to the General Manager.

• Engage in team meetings and cross-functional discussions.

• Effectively collaborate as part of a remote, globally distributed team across different time zones.

• Perform any other related duties as assigned.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Technology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

• Professional experience in cybersecurity, software development, cyber range development, cybersecurity training, or a related technical field.

• A strong understanding of cybersecurity concepts, tools, technologies, as well as common attack and defense strategies.

• Proven experience in developing or modifying hands-on cybersecurity challenges, labs, exercises, or similar technical content.

• Proficiency in scripting or programming languages such as Python, Bash, PowerShell, or similar.

• Experience with automation, testing, debugging, and troubleshooting in technical environments.

• Ability to work with pre-existing codebases, frameworks, and technical platforms and adapt them to new applications.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a systematic approach to troubleshooting and quality assurance.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the capacity to document technical processes and solutions clearly.

• Ability to work independently, manage assigned tasks effectively, and collaborate successfully within a distributed team.

• Unrestricted authorization to work in the USA; visa sponsorship is not available.

• Preferred: experience in developing content for cyber ranges, CTFs, cybersecurity labs, or hands-on technical training environments.

• Preferred: experience with containerization, virtualization, cloud environments, APIs, or infrastructure-as-code.

• Preferred: familiarity with NICE, NIST, or DCWF cybersecurity workforce frameworks.

• Preferred: experience in developing automation or tooling for content deployment, testing, or analytics.

• Preferred: familiarity with Git, CI/CD, code review, and issue tracking.

• Preferred: SANS or other pertinent cybersecurity certifications.

• Preferred: experience in a remote, globally distributed technical environment.
