This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Arizona, +4 more states.
• Oversee accounting, financial reporting, cash management, budgeting, compliance with grants and contracts, tax coordination, and internal control functions across multiple nonprofit entities.
• Report to the VP of Operations and client executive leadership on a fractional basis.
• Act as a hands-on technical leader for the financial operations of nonprofit clients.
• Daily and weekly review and approval of client credit card transactions and vendor invoices.
• Examine work papers, monthly closing packages, and financial deliverables submitted by external accounting firms.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for annual financial statement audits.
• Set up, modify, and enhance client accounting systems.
• Create and manage custom financial, program, and grant reporting.
• Maintain fund-level accounting for net assets, both restricted and unrestricted by donors.
• Monitor releases from restrictions and reconcile donor-restricted balances with gift and grant agreements.
• Implement ASU 2018-08, ASC 606, and ASU 2020-07 for accounting of nonprofit revenue and contributed assets.
• Manage federal, state, foundation, and corporate grant portfolios, including budget-to-actual reporting, drawdown and reimbursement requests, subrecipient monitoring, and compliance with Uniform Guidance.
• Develop and sustain methodologies for functional expense and cost allocation.
• Generate statements of functional expenses and support negotiated indirect cost rate agreements.
• Prepare audit-ready schedules and the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards.
• Coordinate single audits and assist with the preparation of Form 990 and Form 990-T with external CPAs.
• Track endowments, calculate spending policy, and ensure compliance with UPMIFA.
• Lead cash flow projections, liquidity planning, monitoring of operating reserves, compliance with debt covenants, and management of lines of credit.
• Develop annual budgets, program- and grant-level budgets, long-range forecasts, and scenario models.
• Provide consolidated month-end reporting packages, finance and audit committee materials, KPI dashboards, and internal control measures.
• Manage annual audit and tax workflows in collaboration with external CPAs.
• Supervise internal staff, client personnel, and third-party staff while implementing multi-agent AI workflows.
• An AI-first mindset with a strong, self-motivated curiosity for AI and the active application of tools in workflows.
• Direct experience in designing and deploying tailored AI solutions, including Claude Artifacts, custom GPTs, personalized Projects, and specialized prompt skills.
• Proficient in leveraging and managing multiple AI agents simultaneously.
• Proven background as a Controller serving tax-exempt organizations.
• Experience in fund accounting involving both restricted and unrestricted net assets.
• Experience managing federal and private grant portfolios, donor-designated funding, and structures involving multiple entities or affiliates.
• Operational leadership experience in process design, vendor and systems management, payroll and HR coordination, and cross-functional leadership.
• Deep proficiency in Sage Intacct, Excel, and Google Workspace.
• Familiarity with QuickBooks Online, Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT, BILL, Ramp, Gusto or ADP payroll, Salesforce Nonprofit Cloud, Raiser's Edge, Bloomerang, and Expensify.
• Highly organized with experience in leading fractional engagements, managing tight deadlines, consolidating multiple entities, and adhering to grant reporting schedules.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills for remote client engagement and presentations to executive directors, finance committees, and boards.
• 8–10+ years of progressive accounting leadership with substantial experience in nonprofit or tax-exempt organizations.
• Mastery of GAAP for not-for-profit entities (ASC 958), fund accounting, multi-entity consolidations, federal award compliance, and functional expense allocation.
• Demonstrated expertise in Sage Intacct and hands-on ability to build custom GPTs, Claude Artifacts, and automated workflows.
• A Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance is required.
• CPA, CNAP, or a Master's degree is strongly preferred.
• Ability to work standard hours from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the local time zone; MST or PST preferred.
• Infrequent travel is preferred, 1x per month or less, for initial client discovery assessments or strategic team meetings.
• Attendance at the annual all-team retreat is required.
• PTO of 120 hours per year (equivalent to 3 weeks).
