Consultant – Public Health Informatics

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Maryland.

📋 Description

• Perform evaluations of public health information systems, technological capabilities, workflows, interoperability, and the supporting infrastructure.

• Collect and analyze data through document reviews, interviews, workshops, system demonstrations, data analysis, and other assessment activities.

• Collaborate with public health leaders, program staff, informaticians, technology teams, vendors, HIEs, and various stakeholders.

• Assess current-state capabilities to identify gaps, risks, and actionable recommendations.

• Review technology architectures, interoperability strategies, standards, and implementation options.

• Utilize knowledge of U.S. healthcare and public health interoperability standards in technology evaluations and modernization projects.

• Offer hands-on informatics expertise related to data, workflows, standards, interfaces, and information exchange.

• Create reports, presentations, assessment findings, roadmaps, and other deliverables for clients.

• Deliver analysis and recommendations to client stakeholders and executive leaders.

• Assist in the development of evaluation frameworks, methodologies, criteria, and metrics.

• Work alongside multidisciplinary professionals in public health, informatics, technology, policy, and program management.

• Participate in project planning, client meetings, research, analysis, and other consulting endeavors.

• Gradually take ownership of assessment activities, client interactions, analysis, and deliverables.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in public health, health informatics, biomedical informatics, information systems, computer science, health administration, or a related field.

• Professional experience in health informatics, public health informatics, health IT, interoperability, or a closely related area.

• Practical informatics experience involving health data, information systems, interoperability, workflows, data exchange, or standards.

• Experience in contributing to assessments or evaluations of public health or healthcare technologies, systems, or information capabilities.

• Background in developing and presenting analysis, findings, or recommendations for clients or organizational leaders.

• Familiarity with U.S. national healthcare and public health technology and interoperability standards, including HL7 FHIR, HL7 v2, C-CDA, USCDI, terminology standards, or related national interoperability frameworks.

• Knowledge of the U.S. HIE ecosystem, including health information exchanges, health information networks, health data utilities, or similar data-intermediary organizations.

• Strong analytical, research, written communication, and presentation abilities.

• Capability to effectively communicate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary consulting team.

• Preferred: hands-on experience in public health informatics within or supporting a federal, state, tribal, local, or territorial public health organization.

• Preferred: experience with public health data exchange or systems that facilitate electronic case reporting, electronic laboratory reporting, immunization, syndromic surveillance, vital records, registries, or other public health programs.

• Preferred: experience collaborating with HIEs, health data utilities, health information networks, or national interoperability initiatives.

• Preferred: consulting experience supporting government health agencies.
