This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia, +1 more state.
• Conduct reviews and audits of clinical data provided to the STS Congenital Heart Surgery Database, ensuring alignment with source medical record documentation.
• Confirm the accuracy and completeness of case selection, procedure coding, outcomes, and registry variables.
• Utilize HMS audit tools to identify and document matches, mismatches, and any potential data quality issues.
• Examine operative reports, progress notes, diagnostic studies, discharge summaries, and other pertinent medical records.
• Engage in initial and ongoing training activities for reviewers.
• Achieve set productivity, quality, and inter-rater reliability benchmarks.
• Raise inquiries about data definitions, documentation interpretation, or audit results through the designated channels.
• Take part in adjudication activities and review documentation when responding to preliminary audit findings from sites.
• Deliver clear and professional documentation regarding audit decisions and the rationale behind them.
• Uphold confidentiality and adhere to HMS security, privacy, and data protection standards.
• Attend team meetings and project calls as necessary.
• Carry out additional tasks as assigned.
• A Registered Nurse (RN), physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, perfusionist, or another clinically licensed healthcare professional.
• At least two years of recent experience in clinical, registry abstraction, quality improvement, or auditing.
• Background in reviewing complex medical records.
• Comprehensive understanding of clinical documentation requirements and medical terminology.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and electronic medical records.
• Capability to work independently in a remote setting.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
• Ability to adhere to established deadlines and quality requirements.
• Direct experience with the STS Congenital Heart Surgery Database (CHSD) is preferred.
• Previous experience in registry auditing or data validation is preferred.
• Clinical experience in pediatric cardiology, congenital heart surgery, pediatric intensive care, cardiovascular surgery, or related fields is preferred.
• Familiarity with STS data definitions, abstraction guidelines, and performance measures is preferred.
• Experience with Epic, Cerner, Meditech, or other major electronic medical record platforms is preferred.
• Experience in interpreting operative reports and documentation of congenital cardiac procedures is preferred.
• Knowledge of congenital cardiac anatomy, procedures, and terminology.
• Ability to accurately interpret clinical documentation and apply registry definitions.
• Capability to manage multiple assignments concurrently.
• Ability to quickly learn and apply new audit tools, processes, and guidelines.
