Backend Engineer, Source Code – Repository Services, Ruby

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Conceptualize, implement, test, and deploy backend features and enhancements with minimal supervision.

• Develop and sustain secure, observable, and efficient backend code and services.

• Design and oversee APIs, background tasks, integrations, and bounded service functionalities.

• Work with data models, migrations, indexes, and query behaviors.

• Enhance and expand unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end automated test coverage.

• Evaluate code for accuracy, maintainability, security, performance, and operational risks.

• Investigate issues related to build, test, deployment, and runtime failures.

• Recognize technical debt and suggest actionable improvements.

• Participate in on-call or operational support as needed.

• Employ and validate AI tools in everyday engineering tasks.

• Collaborate with Product Management, Frontend, Infrastructure, Security, and design teams.

• Take ownership of features from problem definition to production follow-up.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in developing and delivering production-grade backend applications.

• Strong foundation in programming, API development, database management, testing, debugging, and performance optimization.

• Familiarity with Ruby/Rails, Go, or another contemporary backend programming language.

• Capability to learn and adapt across different programming languages.

• Ability to manage features from clarification to delivery and follow-up independently.

• Good judgment concerning security, reliability, performance, maintainability, and operational risks.

• Understanding of modular backend boundaries and the implications of coupling.

• Excellent written communication and collaboration skills in a remote, asynchronous setting.

• Practical experience with AI coding tools, including reviewing and correcting generated code.

• Desirable experience with production Go services, APIs, concurrency, profiling, gRPC, Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, CI/CD, cloud deployment, Rust, PostgreSQL, schema evolution, caching, queues, messaging, event-driven workflows, observability, and modular or independently operated services.
