Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Portugal.

📋 Description

• Develop and manage scalable backend systems that deliver AI-driven functionalities in production.

• Create efficient inference pipelines and orchestration workflows.

• Establish clear service boundaries around machine learning models.

• Take responsibility for system health and observability, which includes performance monitoring, structured logging, alerting, and incident management.

• Enhance latency and throughput through smart caching, request batching, and response streaming.

• Work collaboratively with clients and machine learning engineers.

• Provide robust, high-efficiency APIs for both mobile and desktop applications.

• Demonstrated experience in core backend software engineering within production settings.

• Proficiency in Python and Node.js.

• Familiarity with infrastructure tools such as Docker and Kubernetes.

• Practical knowledge of building and maintaining high-throughput, low-latency distributed microservices.

• Strong understanding of contemporary AI inference patterns, including LLMs, vector embeddings, and multimodal architectures.

• Experience in debugging and profiling intricate distributed systems under heavy loads.

• Acquainted with commercial AI APIs such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

• Knowledge of self-hosted open-source models.

• A production-oriented mindset with a focus on delivery, observing live system behavior, and rapid iteration.
