Automation Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Puerto Rico.

📋 Description

• Act as a technical resource and Subject Matter Expert for alarm configuration within Rockwell Automation PLC/HMI and/or DeltaV systems.

• Collect, consolidate, and analyze alarm and event data to pinpoint nuisance alarms, identify bad actors, address alarm floods, and uncover opportunities for improvement.

• Lead and support alarm rationalization initiatives across manufacturing, utilities, fermentation, purification, and wastewater treatment operations.

• Facilitate cross-functional discussions on alarm rationalization, focusing on setpoints, priorities, causes, consequences, and corrective actions.

• Create and sustain alarm rationalization documentation and maintain the master alarm database.

• Initiate, prepare, coordinate, and oversee change controls related to alarm modifications.

• Configure and/or validate approved changes to alarms within automation systems.

• Ensure adherence to GMP, data integrity, validation, and quality standards.

• Provide troubleshooting assistance for PLC/HMI and DeltaV alarm-related issues.

• Assist in testing and validation activities concerning implemented automation changes.

• Review SOPs, drawings, schematics, work orders, and technical documents.

• Develop user requirements, functional specifications, and supporting engineering documentation.

• Coordinate changes in instrumentation, control modules, and setpoints with Engineering and Process teams.

• Monitor project activities and deliver regular status updates and KPI reports to stakeholders.

• Support ongoing improvement and re-rationalization efforts as manufacturing processes develop.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Chemical, Computer, Mechanical, Industrial Engineering, or a related engineering field.

• Prior experience in Automation, Controls, or Process Control within a manufacturing setting.

• Familiarity with DeltaV and/or Rockwell Automation PLC/HMI systems is highly desirable.

• Understanding of industrial instrumentation, including both smart and conventional types.

• Previous experience in alarm management or alarm rationalization is strongly preferred.

• Knowledge of ISA-18.2 and/or EEMUA 191 alarm management principles is advantageous.

• Experience in managing change controls within an electronic quality management system such as Veeva Vault or similar is preferred.

• Experience with Computer Systems Validation (CSV) in GMP-regulated environments.

• Strong understanding of GMP requirements and data integrity principles.

• Proficient in data analysis, including expertise with Excel and alarm management/reporting tools.

• Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to independently manage multiple priorities and project deliverables.

• Exceptional communication and collaboration skills across various functions.

• Ability to work efficiently with multidisciplinary teams in a remote setting.

• Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.

• Willingness to provide support to a 24/7 manufacturing operation when necessary.

• Experience in alarm rationalization/alarm management, DeltaV, Rockwell Automation PLC/HMI, process control, instrumentation, Veeva Vault change controls, CSV, pharmaceutical or biotechnology manufacturing, ISA-18.2/EEMUA 191, and GMP operations is highly desirable.
