This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Arizona, +5 more states.
• Identify, excavate, and document potential archaeological sites
• Conduct excavations, screening, and collection of archaeological materials in accordance with federal and/or state archaeological standards
• Clean and/or process artifacts for laboratory analysis
• Assist with laboratory tasks related to post-field activities
• Carry out Phase I through Phase III historic and/or prehistoric investigations
• Recognize and record archaeological features and structures
• Document and map survey areas, testing locations, excavations, and visible cultural resources
• Accurately complete paper and/or electronic field forms
• Record soil color and type utilizing a Munsell soil chart
• Utilize a compass for basic navigation within project areas
• Adhere to GAI, client, and OSHA health and safety policies
• Ensure client confidentiality is maintained
• Work outdoors in diverse terrain and weather conditions
• Manage personal tasks while adhering to project deadlines, budgets, and scope
• Discuss technician work performance with management
• Clearly and concisely communicate field results to senior cultural resources staff
• Mentor or coach less experienced staff and potentially lead a small crew
• B.A. or B.S. degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, History, Historic Preservation, American Studies, or a related field; an associated degree, enrollment in a field school, or equivalent skills and experience are also acceptable
• Preferred minimum of 1–3 years of Cultural Resource Management (CRM) experience in North America
• Experience with archaeological field excavation techniques, artifact identification, data recording, mapping, and surveying
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Willingness to travel, including up to 100% during weekdays and occasional weekend travel/work
• Independent means of transportation is preferred
• Valid driver's license is required
• Pre-employment drug testing is required
• Ability to work outdoors in varying and extreme weather conditions
• Capability to walk 8–10 miles per day, sometimes over rugged terrain, while carrying tools and equipment
• Ability to lift and/or move objects up to 40 lbs and carry up to 25 lbs of gear
• Ability to excavate, shovel, screen soils, clear brush, and engage in physically demanding fieldwork
• Must have steel-toed shoes
• Basic understanding of soils, Munsell soil chart usage, compass/navigation, photography, sketch mapping, and field forms
• Ability to work independently or under supervision, follow directions, manage personal tasks, and meet deadlines
• Ability to coach or mentor less experienced staff and potentially lead a small crew
