Art Director – 12-month Contract

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Japan.

📋 Description

• Generate innovative and diverse designs for Canva’s Japan community.

• Create concepts for templates that reflect themes and topics significant to Japan.

• Design accompanying assets, such as illustrations and design elements.

• Recommend design styles and creative directions that resonate with local user preferences.

• Evaluate Creator template submissions and offer constructive feedback.

• Utilize AI tools to efficiently produce templates for the Japan market while maintaining craftsmanship and cultural relevance.

• Compose Creator briefs that provide direction, context, and inspiration.

• Collaborate with the Design Lead to oversee PPO designers and ensure projects remain on track, on-brief, and meet deadlines.

• Manage the comprehensive rollout of Canva’s Japan content library.

• Work together with copywriters, illustrators, market growth, and localization specialists.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience as an Art Director, Graphic Designer, or Visual Designer in both digital and print marketing.

• A genuine passion for design trends and styles that are specific to Japan.

• A portfolio that showcases clean, elegant, and visually appealing design work.

• Strong skills in hand illustration, typography, color theory, conceptual graphic design, and layout.

• A keen eye for visual, cultural, and pop culture trends.

• A solid stylistic perspective grounded in fundamental design principles.

• Ability to design with the end user in mind while delivering high-quality work on time and within the project brief.

• Experience providing clear, kind, and constructive design feedback.

• Proficient in using AI tools within the design workflow and eager to explore their potential further.

• Capability to write concise and effective creative briefs.

• Experience in coordinating or mentoring a small team of designers, or a willingness to take on this responsibility.
