This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Become an expert in Upstart’s models, products, business, and/or codebase.
• Identify potential challenges or areas for enhancement.
• Convey issues and opportunities to the team while proposing solutions.
• Carry out self-directed inquiries and offline analyses through innovative thinking.
• Present findings to the Machine Learning (ML) team.
• Investigate machine learning and statistical methods to enhance predictive accuracy and/or business value of models.
• Design, implement, and assess model, product, or technical advancements utilizing rigorous experimentation and validation techniques.
• Convert research outcomes into clear recommendations, documented methodologies, and production-ready solutions.
• Collaborate with a mentor to align stakeholders and facilitate next steps.
• Work closely with the team to enhance products and models.
• Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in mathematics, statistics, physics, econometrics, computer science, or a related quantitative discipline.
• Expected to graduate by 2028.
• Strong foundations in statistical, probability, and machine learning theories.
• Capability to perform data analysis and assess machine learning or statistical models using Python.
• Basic understanding of SQL.
• Intellectual curiosity, humility, ambition, and a collaborative spirit.
• Excellent communication abilities.
• Proficiency in using modern agentic tools (e.g., Claude Code, Codex) effectively.
• Experience with supervised learning, model evaluation, and feature engineering techniques is preferred.
• Advanced knowledge of statistical theory (frequentist, Bayesian, causal) and econometrics is preferred.
• Strong programming skills in Python are preferred.
• This role is available to candidates residing and working in the U.S.; Upstart is currently unable to hire in Quebec.
